for the front and rear derailures on my new bike (3 weeks old), there are these really tiny screws, so i decided to check if they were tight.. OOOPS! they seem to be adjustment screws or something... i tried to put it back to around where it was. What do these little ones adjust? now do i need to have it reset or something? thanks.

Set wrong and the chain gets thrown off the chainrings, or won't shift. In the rear maladjustment can cause the chain to go off either the big or small cog or not shift to either one or both. Lots of potential bad carma when you fiddle with the screws. Really bad if you don't have a spoke proterctor and shift off the big cog or drop the chain and get it wedged betwen chainring and fragile chainstay..Mindless fiddling with them won't make them right.The repair section at www.paktool.com has the how to on derailer adjustment, or take it to a shop. Didn't the bike come with instructions? Good policy to read them.

simply put, they adjust the high and low stop points for the derailuers and make the drivetrain line up when you shift from gear to gear. If you just bought the bike you can probably take it back up to the bike shop you got it from and ask them to check it out for you. I know the one's here will do a check-up like that for free when you've purchased the bike from them within the year. Does the bike still shift??
