Hey i am a new rider......i am just recovering from major back surgery 3 months ago.......my doctor gave me the all clear today to start biking.......due to my back i need a full suspension bike but i have a limited budget being only 15 i would say $500 max......the only thing i really really want on th bike is "easyfire" shifters of some sort i would also like disc brakes but thats not that important or atleast the ablitly to upgrade later....i have had grip shifters and they always die withen 6 months.....i will be riding on the road probly half the time but want a bike that will perform just as well off road on some of the trails near my house.......i am willing to get a hardtail if i can still afford a suspension seat post....lookin at the thudbuster........i am looking to buy after July 4th....way to busy with work right now to ride any help will be greatly appreciated....

i would save your money up a little while longer and buy a trek or go visit some good local bike shops maybe they will be able to help guide you in the right direction.

If your back is a major concern (sounds like it is) and budget is a real issue you can cure much of the "vibrations" and other issues manny folks complain about and that could aggrevate your back injury with both proper bike fit (through a reputable LBS) and a combination of a suspension seat post and a good cushy seat. The FS rigs may "seem" to offer back relief or be issue "proof", but most of what is going to cause issues is not the sort of thing that the suspension is going to be taking care of. The "hurky-jerky" nature of our sport is part of it's charm.
Although FS rigs do compress and allow us to stay on the hammer or ride things found more difficult on a hardtail when you are riding one you still "feel" the bumps and our bodies still compensate for them and our bodies are still a LARGE part of the suspension system (or should be). Check out some good LBS and start out on really tame trails, really. Take care of your bod and it will take care of you. Good luck with the rehab (I'm in the middle of rehab on my shoulder, 3rd surgery, sucks). Keep the rubber side down.
Try checking out the Giant warp. I was looking at this bike at a local shop and for $50 more ($550) you can get a nice full suspesion bike w/ descent parts, although it does not have disc brakes. Before you think about spening money on upgrading brakes and everthing else deffinitley make sure the suspension is good enough to absorb any bumps that could inflict damage on your back....other than this bike i do not know of any other dual suspension bikes for less money. i think i am going to go with a hardtail...i have decided that if the trail gets to rough on my bike i can slow down or walk.......i am looking at the Haro V2 or V3 or maybe somthing else that i dont know about that is better for the same price....disc brakes are new to me so i dont kno if i really want them because i dont know how to fix them...v-brakes i can fix with my eyes shut i just think if i find a bike in my price range with them thats a plus......i am having alot of trouble finding a bike shop around here...the only one that has a decent selection is a good 30 min drive....used to have an awesome shop but they went out of business and they were only 5 min away.........

Don't forget to change your sadle,my Trek had this narrow thing called sadle that was very,very uncomfortable so i got a Selle Royal Ergogell sadle that changed the way i feel about biking,some may think it's a couch but it's super comfortable and i love it. Dan 🙂
don't get cought up on disc brakes they are not much different unless you are a serious DH rider I like v brakes much better. just be more carefull in the rain.
just don't buy a Mongoose Tech 4 full suspension bike. A guy I know bought one at the local dept. store for $320 and the sticker tag says $700. He told me he did some off roading and before he knew it (after two months of riding) parts started to fall off the bike. Also the shifting became very rough. He brought it to his LBS and they tuned the thing up and replaced the lost parts for a total of $120. SO he was telling me it is better to buy from a LBS than a dept. store because he is sure if he had bought a Trek Y26 from his LBS he'd would have been better off. In reality he spent $440 on his Tech 4 which he has lost confidence in when he could have bought a Trek Y26 for almost the same price...
I don't know much about the Y26 Trek but maybe its something you can look into since its in your budget...

i totally agree with you unless you get a pair of really nice hydraulic ones.
