Its several years since I last attended but when i have its
always been brilliant. This year is the 60th so i'm making a
special trip. Make sure you go by cycle tho'.

I'm assuming you really don't know (most people who post
here seem to assume *everyone* knows...)

The Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) will be holding the annual
York Rally on the Knavesmire racecourse. Cyclists from all
over Britain, and a few from beyond, will converge. They
will arrive by bicycle, train, car, & campervan.

Many will camp on the Knavesmire, in tents or caravans.

There will be rides on Saturday for various categories of
rider.

There will be much of interest to cyclists; many clubs will
have stands where they will try to attract new members and
chat with existing ones. There will be genuine bargains in
the Trade tent: bicycle bits, spares, clothes, camping
equipment etc.

There will be a Cyclists church (*not* at York Minster this
year :-() Service on Sunday morning followed by a Grand
Parade of cyclists through York (unusual bikes and family
groups first, then ordiary machines) and back to the
Knavesmire. The Police stop all the traffic to allow the
cyclists through.

There will be racing on the grass. You would have the
opportunity to discuss cycling matters with some old hands -
most people are very friendly!

Many (most?!?) of those who go to York will not be sporting
the latest equipment; they have found what works well for
them and stuck with it.

The Rally is not full of young people, though families do
come, with small kids. At 50+, you will seem to be of
average age; shiny new bikes and unworn/unfaded clothes
might betray you as newbies.

I've gone to York every year for about 15 years; I can't go
this year and I'm gutted!

I have seen pictures from many years ago of a bicycle towed
caravan. Judging by the weather forecast there may be
caravans and tents flying round Knavesmire this weekend so
keeping them off the bikes may be a problem ;-)

Was planning to go for the weekend and do some rides but
rethinking about a day trip looking at the weather.

ISTR there was also the bent that pulled its full fairing
which I understood doubled up as a 'caravan' when without
its innards. Fairly recently too I think.

Cycling events should follow suit, particularly those run by
'campaigning' organisations like the CTC. It would emphasise
the cycling aspects of the meet.

We once arrived late at the New Forest Cycling week to be
greeted by the campsite warden who said it was good to see
someone arrive by bike as no one else had.

I shake my head with some disbelief at some who drive
several hundred miles to be able to place their bike by
their tent or caravan at some events and then they compalin
about the traffic they have encountered.

I also know that Bellever Youth Hostel on Dartmoor gives a
small rebate to anyone who arrives by bus.

Almost. It was referred to as "Sacha's Caravan", but was
actually doubling up as a luggage trailer. 1996.

That would mean that many folk would not attend. I could
cycle there from my home but I am not going to do it on a
Friday evening after work, thus I wouldn't be camping, thus
my fees will not be paid. The other time I camped over, I
drove from London, if I had to pay a hefty premium or
couldn't drive onto the site I would have gone.

Rather than heavily penalise those coming by car, it's a
much better idea the 'reward' those arriving by bike etc.

Harewood House, north of Leeds has half price (or something
like that) entry for those arriving by bike, or public
transport.

Re the Rally, I wasn't expecting to attend, life is busy
Chez French at the moment, but Helen will be on call on
Saturday, so it's just me and little 'un, so I may make a
trip across on Saturday.

Are there any plans for a urc meet up at any point.

looks like going on one of the shorter rides would be good,
the family ride to Ricall, or the Sustrans pedalling picnic

Not sure what to do transport wise :-) - cycling the 50 mile
round trip there for a day trip with the trailer isn't a
realistic option for me

Train is ok, but taking bike and trailer on the Arriva
trains from Horsforth might be so-so - space is limited to 2
bikes normally, though the trailer should be ok folded I
guess. My main complaint is that the journey takes ages, the
train itself is about an hour (as it goes via Harrogate)
plus travel to and from the stations etc. we are talking an
hour and a half.

Sadly, taking it all in or on the car would be much the
easiest and quickest option( It's about 25 miles and on
Saturday morning is an easy journey)

anyway, maybe see you there. :-)

AFAIK no plan has been made, Guy was talking about a early
evening rendezvous on Saturday for beer. However due to the
weather forcast I am reconsidering my options and am
contemplating not camping on Friday and Saturday but cycling
over on Saturday morning returning in the afternoon/early
evening. I am not particularly interested in the rides
anyway, but I do want to visit the trade shopw. It'll mean I
get a 60-70 mile ride in, get to see the football on Friday
and Saturday and get to have comfortable nights sleep ! Plus
I will not be using my car but of course the CTC will miss
out on my camping fees though.

Does anyone know what time roughly the Riccall or Cawood or
Lotherton rides will be heading back to York ? I could go
via one of these places and hook up with them.

Thus I propose we meet up in or near to the refreshments
tent at say
14:30. This is open to negotiation of course. I'll most
likely have the metallic blue/grey Raleigh Royal with
me as its the best bike for carrying my loot home.

The York Cycle Rally, simply loads of folk come from a wide
range of ages and experience. The rally starts on Friday at
4pm when the 'campers' arrive, come before and there is
nothing to see or do but mill around with others and wait.
The rally is organised by a dedicated group of volunteers,
who unselfishly spend the previous year planning the event.

Correction - the CTC does not organise the York Cycle Rally.
The Rally is organised by an independent organising
committee and has no input from the CTC for the past three
years, when the secretarial function of the committee was
moved for Godalming to Leeds.
