Never been to Freewheel I'm afraid but if you want bike shops in Derby then Samways and Mercian are
worth a visit. Both have been around for donkeys years and Mercian are a very well respected frame
building outfit (who are also a Specialized stockist as it happens).

There is also Planet Cycles in Allenton/Shelton Lock who have some very cheap prices on
bikes and bits.

Hi - I live in Loughborough, so just down the road to you, a bit of a newbie myself, never used
freewheel, but a good friend bought a specialised something from there and said service, advice etc
was excellent. For an LBS, I can recommend the shop I can never remember the name of on Ashby Road
in Loughborough - if you cycle down into town it is on the corner opposite a curry house called the
rupika, you can't miss it! I didn't get my bike from there as they didn't have what I wanted and
another LBS had one in stock and in the sale, but the advice was excellent. I have taken mine there
for servicing and they are great, even with a newbie like me, very patient with my endless stupid
questions.

Incidentally, I would not use the LBS on the A6/Derby Road in Loughborough (where I bought my Dawes
from) they are not very helpful and I disliked them so much I didn't even go back for my free
service! I went in to book my bike
in/ask when I could drop it off thinking I could drop it off one evening on my way home and pick it
up the next and they refused to keep it overnight as "it didn't suit them"

Apparently owned by the same people as Sheffield Cycles in Burton. If the service at Planet Cycles
is anything like the same, you can't go far wrong - I've used Sheffield a fair bit and they're
always happy to help out. Good (and cheap) wheel-builders, too.

Yep, you're right, Planet and Sheffield Cycles are the same people. I've used both stores and have
had good service from each, in fact I've bought pedals from Sheffield Cycles and exchanged the
faulty cleats at Planet because it was more convenient for me, that was pretty helpful of them. I'll
happily recommend both shops.

I did however have an unsettling experience when I bought my road bike from Sheffield Cycles a year
or two back. Had never dealt with them before and had nipped over to collect my shiny new bike.
Whilst waiting in the shop I got chatting to a young lad who was also collecting a new bike, he was
equally excited. His bike was ready first and he wheeled it out with a big grin on his face as happy
as Larry. He wheeled it back in about two minutes later. He'd set off down the road and the seat had
fallen off.

They fixed the saddle for him, apologised and off he went again. Then he came back. This time it was
the rear brake that had come undone (cable not secured properly). It too was fixed, apologies
expressed and he left once more.

Then he came back again. I didn't actually see what was wrong this third time (I was other end of
shop checking my new steed *very* carefully) but it was obvious something else had dropped off,
sprung apart or died and he was pretty unhappy by this time. Didn't exactly fill me with confidence
but I'd paid the bill by then.
