Why would you hold yourself back in a national championship???? That doesn't make any sense ........
It is a different course, there are mostly riders from that one nationalality competing, and your other rivals aren't really paying attention to this race.
A win is a win. Competitors usually race to win, not to place fourth or fifth .......

A clever put-down is always good form for RBR.
According to Cioni's coach TT's are not a big deal in Italy and the riders do them as just another race, albeit one with some importance. Cioni didn't decide to do the TT until the last minute and it's likely that others did likewise. He said there were only about 12 pros at the start. Cioni has been building his form since he came from MTB races several years ago and he is in the best shape of his life right now. He's going to rest a bit until some Italian races later in the summer.
Maybe Basso wasn't going 100%. Maybe he wasn't riding his new timetrial settup. Good job by Cioni:
Italian National Championships - CN Terra di Pisa, Italy, June 22-27, 2004 Main Page Results Next Day
Day 1 - June 22: Time Trials Results Open Men - 44 km
1 Dario David Cioni (Fassa Bortolo) 54.06.62 (48.798 km/h) 2 Andrea Peron (Team CSC) 0.05.18 3 Marco Pinotti (Lampre) 0.20.88 4 Ivan Basso (Team CSC) 0.22.33 5 Giairo Ermeti (U.C. Palazzago Av Isol.) 0.49.56 6 Marzio Bruseghin (Fassa Bortolo) 1.05.19 7 Manuel Quinziato (Lampre) 1.20.05 8 Filippo Pozzato (Fassa Bortolo) 1.31.19 9 Domenico Passuello (Amore & Vita Beretta) 1.50.48 10 Fabio Borghesi (Team Miche) 2.02.05
It always amazes me how good all of the Fassa Bortolo team are at time-trialing. It's too bad Dario Frigo neglected this event, he has opted-out of both the Giro and the Tour and also his national championships in his favored discipline. What is he trying to accomplish this season anyway?

good try. you almost had me fooled, but i know you're a master of psychological warfare.

If you are implying a Fred-ism, you are sorely mistaken ........ I am in few to none of the "Lance" defending threads. He's going to get creamed by Ullrich this year.

And there is little to no irony/humor there ......... sounds like a pretty sincere opinion ...........

For what they do in mass start races they need to be.

He needs help, and not the medical kind of help. Not sure if he can ever get back near the top now.

Yes. Yes I am, at least that's what my coach/publicist says.

There seems to me to be a lot of criticism accorded Basso and if my computations are correct he lost about 1/2 second per km. Everyone who thinks of that as serious time raise your hand.
In my opinion all of Basso's time could have been lost in the first 100 meters.

Yeah, especially when CSC forked over how many thousands of dollars for wind tunnel testing? He should've been able to win this.
