I think I'm going to try and give up shouting at motorists. It doesn't seem to do any good. Instead of them saying 'you are quite right I should never have done what I just did I was completely wrong sorry I nearly killed you I will be better in future I promise', they just gesticulate/shout back/beep horns etc. And I don't feel any better for it, in fact I think I feel worse, riding home fuming not just about what they did, but how they reacted to my reaction.
I still reserve the right to remonstrate with driving instructors, however. The roads near our house are a popular practice area, and some instructors let their pupils drive really stupidly round cyclists. I must remember to carry paper and pen to note details and write to driving schools they belong to, particularly one repeat offender.

And that's if you're lucky. One Amsterdam driver was about to beat me up but I defused him by a "non aggresive female" act.
He was utterly crazy though - he screeched past the corner of the road I was just entering, a narrow residential road with cars parked on both sides. He then came to a screeching stop in the middle of the road, and when I passed him (on the passenger side) he reached over and opened that door, which I could just avoid and evoked my shout of an impolite term. After I passed him he then accelerated again and cornered me a bit further on forcing me to stop and got out of his car.
I never really understood what it was all about, the only thing I could think of was that I passed between him and a parking place he intended to get into.

It was a Bad Thing and we Should Be Ashamed etc., but the area immediately outside my folks' house is a popular 3 point turn practice spot. One day, confronted with a particularly hopeless case, brother, sister and I sat on the front wall and held up numbered cards. The scores indicated were not good...

Smart move. On the other hand, a passing Bromptoneer did express admiration for my Air Zound following an enthusisatic bit of Attitude Adjusting this morning :-)

The shout, and the air zound are to wake them up.
Should you wish to educate them, polite talking is more effective. And it helps if you feel the need to tell the police or the driver's boss afterwards, if you can say you did nothing to provoke the stream of abuse you got.

I bought a new one at the weekend (my latest one has been failing to hold its pressure for more than a couple of days over the last few weeks). I noticed from the url printed on the side of the bottle that they're now made[1] by HPVelotechnik: <URL:http://www.hpvelotechnik.com/produkte/a- irzound2_e.html>
I still don't believe the bit where it says: "You can adjust the volume very easily". I've owned four of them now (over 7 years), and my wife's makes five, and I've never, ever managed to adjust the volume to anything other than a full blast or complete silence. But hey, why would I want anything other than a full blast?
[1] Or licenced to them, or distributed by them, or whatever.

In many cases it is probably best to remain calm and ideal people will do that.
However, I have yet to meet an ideal person and hope that I never do.
