  1. This is probably a silly question, but, is there a right way
or wrong way to prepare brats? I don't know whether to boil
them or grill them. Any suggestions will be appreciated. H

Some people do both...simmer in beer then grill. I've done
this with my homemade bratwurst and they turn out pretty
    dang tasty.

Thanks for the good giggle. Just as I read the subject, I
was thinking what a brat my youngest (21 yr old) son was
being. Gonna go heat up the grill!!

Don't do what I did last week. I put mine on the grill and
apparently had the heat too high. When I came back I had
    charcoal instead of brats. 🙂

They were very high in fat and it splattered and this
grill isn't the best I ever had (it's a stop gap grill
until we move into the new house and I can build a real
    grill/smoker thingie).

I believe the boiling depends on how sure you are that they
will be cooked thru on the grill. I have them both ways and
personally prefer the grilled only. It is spectacular to see
the long string of flame as the fat breaks thru the skin.

Hmm.. I thought you were addressing the group. Some of us
would be guilty of that title...

I like to simmer them, poked fulla holes with a fork so they
don't burst, then grill them until they're well singed. A
good roll and spicy mustard makes the picnic! And don't
    forget the beer!

If you mean bratwurst, the usual method is to simmer them
until you think they are sanitary, then briefly singe them
    on a lightly greased griddle.

If you mean illegitimate children, if homestyle discipline
doesn't work, put them in the hands of the Jesuits.

Thanks! How long do you let them simmer before grilling? H

Get those brats up on the highest rack of your grill as far
away from the heat as possible. Do you have a grill with a
rack built into the lid that keeps the meat 12 inches or
more above the flames? If not put the brats on one side of
the grill and turn the fire to wide open on the other side
of the grill, put the lid down and rotate the brats with a
set of tongs every 45 seconds until they are golden brown!

    several batches!)

I always follow the advice that I was given for
bratwurst..... boil them to make sure they are cooked and
    then grill them.

If they're already cooked, just grill them until nicely
browned. If they're not cooked, you can grill them slowly
until nicely browned and cooked through. Me, I'd simmer
them in water for about 10 minutes before grilling until
    nicely browned.

I would certainly grill them, but I am an undisciplined bad
person who is too lazy to look up the "proper" method.

Noooooooooooooooooo! That lets all the flavor out. Cook them
slower and the incidence of bursting is greatly lessened. Ed

yeah, thats the way I like to cook a t-bone steak David. I
boil it for ten minutes and then through it on the grill to
brown it good! That way you make sure to kill all those
little microbes in the meat! (I bet I could kill them with
    chlorox too!)

  18. I'm curious to know why some people advise simmering brats
(in water, beer, etc.) before grilling them.

Hmm, we have some in the freezer. Maybe I will thaw them out
and try a experiment to compare the simmering/grilling vs
    only-grilling results.

I've only seen anyone (myself included) simmer them if I'm
frying them. When I grill them, it's over medium heat and
    turning often.
