distilled water

  1. why do fish require distilled water? also, does distillation
    remove ALL the fluoride from water

  2. I've always heard that the fish cannot handle the
    disinfectant additives such as chlorine & bromine et al in
    the tap water we drink. Boiling will drive off chlorine, but
    won't touch bromine or fluoride. Even the best filter won't
    remove fluoride. Reverse osmosis or distillation is the
    method normally used to remove fluoride and all other
    impurities.

    Your best bet is to use distilled water, it will typically
    remove greater than 98% of all impurities, depending upon
    the quality of the distiller. I have had a distiller for
    over 25 years, and had its water output tested on a liquid
    chromatograph. The result was that my distilled water was
    equal to the laboratory reference water.

    chlorine. Usually an activated charcoal filter is used in
    association with steam distillation.

    My liquid chromatograph test showed no evidence of any
    impurities in the water.

    A carbon filter does remove chlorine; it does not remove
    fluorine/fluoride.

  5. You don't quite have it right though your are not fully
    wrong either. During chlorination of water, the chlorine
    combines with organic materials to produce various volatile
    chlorinated hydrocarbons. Some of these will get through a
    simple distillation process. The chloride ion will stay
    behind with the cations on the bottom and sides of the
    heated tank the recieves the undistilled water. I think the
    fluoride would also tend to remain in the bottom the primary
    tank also.

    My distillation unit also has a carbon filter to treat the
    distillate..

  6. Thanks. You're absolutely right.

    My distiller, an older unit of 30 years ago, doesn't have
    the carbon filter. It does produce extremely high quality
    water. Much higher quality than that which comes out of the
    tap. I do, however, have a carbon filter in the tap water
    which I use to fill the tank. Some older units let the
    boiling vapor out for 5 minutes before closing the top of
    the tank. This lets out the most volatile elements,
    including oils, etc.

    Fluoride, being a salt similar to NaCl, will remain in the
    tank Any volatile fluorine compounds should have been picked
    up by the carbon filter. I'm not sure just what fluoride
    compound is used today, but it was once sodium fluoride.

    One very important thing is that this water is void of
    minerals. So if we are to drink it, we must get calcium and
    magnesium, and other minerals from a good daily supplement
    and/or wholesome foods.

    In an acidic water fluoride will be in the vapor as hydrogen
    fluoride. I think I would add some lime to the tank to get a
    higher pH.

    Given the salts I wipe out of my distiller tanks, I don't
    think I have to worry.
