Just did a search on 'cornering' and was surprised that no topic dedicated to it came to the fore... possibly in there somewhere....
I usually ride long straight rides with little hard turning...problem being when I get on a race with lots of turns I freeze up at the corners and seem to go into them too slow and my arc is too big...
I know there is no secret answer other than to do more of them and gain confidence.... but....
How hard can you go before sliding out?
I ride on smooth treadless Bontrager tyres that give me even less confidence on corners.... I have an older heavier bike that has tread on the tyres and it loves corners but my new bike (TREK5500) I'm still not happy going hard around corners with...
I did 2 hours of cornering training yesterday and by the end of it I was going in fast and my arcs were much smaller than my earlier attempts so confidence seems to be my biggest hurdle...
Any tips on improving on corners?
I brake a bit before the corner but try to be pedalling at the apex of the curve to pull out of it or just holding my outside pedal down till I feel safe to go....
Any rules of thumb?
How fast can you get around a tight 90 degree turn?
Or a harder 110 degree turn?
Or a 180 degree narrow hairpin?
I can always hear lighter riders coming through faster on my inside, do I ignore them, hold my line and bump them out if they cross my back wheel?
Weight must be a big factor here as well....
YOur thoughts please..... WIndy race coming up in 2 weeks... (will be spending the whole day on the course tomorrow experimenting with both my bikes.....and pushing them to the sliding limit...well almost).
