If you are new to mountain biking, buy a hardtail and learn
how to ride. Stay on the trail and ride, ride, ride. Low-end
full suspension bikes like the trek fool are garbage.

  3. The fuel was a good design 10 years ago. Now it's just old.

The OP said that he was new to the sport. I'm not sure that
someone new to the sport should bother/would be wise
shelling out a lot of money for carbon components. Of
course, if money is no object.... <shrug>

  6. I Just got a Fuel 98 for Christmas {got to love the wife}. I
really like the bike I have had a couple hardtail in the
past . Some really good ones to .But the fuel is nice 2 of
the racers in the area have fuel 100s .They have the pro
pedal fox shock ,The bike handles well and does a good job
of going up hill .But a lot of $$$ cash for a Person just
getting into riding.I'm 44 and been riding for about 12
years The FS is great for extenened rides .I still take my
HT Dean colonel Ti out for a shorted ride I still love the
Ti over Alum, Buy what you can afford and ride it till it
breaks . I broke a Trek Y22 twice in one summer. To many log
    crossing . Good luck .
Ps Treks warranty is great ??

Pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with Nike, either
the god or the shoe. Also, please don't post in HTML.

I was new to the sport last summer, and I got a Fuel 90. I
thoroughly enjoyed it until someone backed over it last
week. When it came to replacing the bike, I went with a
different brand and model; partly, I wanted a more
aggressive riding position, but partly, I just like to try
    new things.

I don't know what your financial situation is, but one thing
to consider is that your tastes may change as you improve.
Starting out, you really don't know what you will want. If
you have enough cash that you can buy a Fuel 100 and then
buy something else in a year or two, more power to you. If
you don't, you might want to consider getting something in a
price range that will allow you that freedom.

Either way, have you ridden other brands? I got stuck in a
"must have Trek" mentality with my first bike, and I
honestly don't know why. It's much more important to fit
well on a bike than to have the brand you want. If it
    doesn't fit, move on.

(If you do have that kind of cash, would you consider
donating to my "Monique needs a Jamis" fund? J/K!)

I had no problems with my Fuel 90. People will tell you
about the dangers of bontrager cranks; they worked fine on
my bike, but it's something to watch for. If you're
experiencing a lot of chain suck, they may be the culprit.

Where did this one come from? Get this clyde, a high end
bike starts at the FRAME. If you put XTR on a huffy, it's
still a huffy. Put XTR on a trek and it's still a piece of
    [censored] trek. Thanks for playing.

Went out last night with a group from the LBS. The owner has
a new Fuel 90. It sucked 3 times and dropped once. The
chain, Sorni, the chain. Damn thing is so new the welds are
still warm. Well, not exactly, but you know what I mean. The
trail is buff, so no dirt/dust. The chain is spotless. When
it dropped on him as he was going around a switchback (not
even pedalling - WTF?), he muttered "Bontrager [censored]", and I
had to laugh. This guy is the biggest Trek fan there is west
    of Vo2lker.

It may be that his FD isn't adjusted properly, or he tweaked
the shifter coming around the corner, but falling down due
to chain drop ain't gonna make Keith any friends.

For you AMB-ID folks - getting pushed by better/more fit
riders sure is nice. Better than sheparding n00bs around,
even though that has it's own rewards, too. Like riding a
particular section 3 or 4 times to show how to deal with a
particular obstacle. Like hucking a big rock down by an
alpine lake, or so I've heard...

Ok, I'm [censored]! Yesterday my kid scratced up my new "Lost
Lonely Boys" CD and it started skipping. And now you!
