I visited my family doctor this morning for what I thought
was a strange sinus problem. I would never have dreamed that
I would be sent home with orders to take at least a week off
from running. I've been having pain behind my left ear and
into my neck for a couple of weeks. At first I thought that
I had just slept wrong or something. I guess that I should
have realized that that kind of pain doesn't hang around
quite that long. Over the weekend the head pain became more
severe. It hurts to move my head to the left, and the pain
behind my ear has intenisified, and radiates into the top of
the back of my head now. I had trouble sleeping last night,
and I was nauseated with the pain this morning. That is what
prompted my visit to the doctor. I do have a history of ear
infections in that left ear. The ear has ruptured twice in
the past, and at one time was so irritated that I had
shingles in the ear canal. I told the doctor this morning
that I've also had another weird thing going on with that
left side that appeared to be affected by running. That's
why the topic of my exercise habits even came up. In the
last six months when I do long runs of two hours or more I
get this lovely, yellow mucus that comes out of my left eye.
This is accompanied by the loss of hearing in my left ear
for about twenty-four hours. The puss-like stuff is bad
enough that I have to take my contacts out for the day
because they just keep getting scummy. Now to me all of this
sounds like some kind of a sinus thing. The doctor says he
suspects either mastoiditis or bone spurs or degeneration of
one of the cervical disks in my neck. He prescribed
antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory drug. I'm having an X-
ray of the spine and a CT scan of my skull/brain tomorrow.
He also says no running until we figure out what this is.
Have any of you had experience with anything like this? Does
terminating my running really sound necessary? I'm doing
what he says, but I don't like it. Michelle

Don't worry. I'm sure the CT scan of your brain will come
back negative. -
Dude, Your brain has ruptured, that stuff dribbling out is
dissolved brain matter. Actually, if all else comes back
negative, then it is spinal misalignment which was my 1st
guess anyway. If it is that, RUN, DO NOT WALK away from the
MD, because there is zippo he can do for you. Find a good,
reputable chiropractor in your area, there are several
referal services available. PLEASE do not let the MD give
you pills (muscle relaxers) and other [censored], they won't help
in the long run. If after a day or two or three you start
getting worse, get out for a run, because if that mucous
stops draining out of your eye, it's going to find somewhere
else to go, and it maybe a far more sinister place than
draining out your eye. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't stop
running at all unless there's other problems going on like
unusual fatigue. Running won't help it, but it certainly is
not the cause, and to start doing something differently now
may not be a good idea. Like I said, that puss needs to
drain, and if not out your eye it may find somewhere else to
buildup. Go to chiro to at leasdt be examined, you can do
that in a day, so why wait for test resul;ts etc and suffer
in the meantime? If it's not your spine he'll tell you so.
Good luck."Mrsg" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<QZednU3ZvNW5-lPdRVn-

Thanks, Leo. I've been walking instead of running for the
last couple of days. I had the tests last night, so
hopefully I'll know more by tomorrow or the next day. -

...thehickSeveral of the other more common antibiotics also have the
potential side effects of causing tendon damage.I have no excuse for not reading the side effect prior to
taking the levaquin (thanks for the correct spelling).
However, I probably would have still taken it, I would have
not run or lifted weights during that time. Given the fact
it had gotten to the point of levaquin or the
mastoidectomy...I'd still take the levaquin.I, like many others, blindly follow the doc's advice. Now I
know a bit better. Lesson learned. -

I know a bit better. Lesson learned.I know a little about spine. If you want good back care go
to a physio who has a masters from a program affiliated
with a medical school. Look for someone who practises
"active" therapy, and has training in manipulation
techniques. But that doesn't mean you'll do that, only that
they will have sound medical knowledge to back up the
decision. Physios rock.Zee

I know a LOT about back care, learned the hard way. There is
no difference between a good chiro and a good psyio, except
for $$$. The person giving you this advice is one, and has
ulterior motives. -
You must be a very good doc to give a diagnosis over the
internet like that as opposed to someone who actually saw
the patient.I am sure an adjustment from a chiropractor would cure
him...."Runners 4 Kerry" <[email hidden]> wrote in

You must be a very good doc to give a diagnosis over the
internet like that as opposed to someone who actually saw
the patient.I am, and far more qualified too! Truth is, Dr's know squat
about running. When I hurt my back (severe enough for Dr's
to retire a 37YO) many years ago, I asked every Dr, and
every chiropractor I saw (14 MD's alone) if I could run
again, they unanamously, unequivicably said "ABSOLUTELY NOT,
EVER AGAIN SHOULD YOU/WILL YOU RUN". So when all their
advice failed, I went to a chiro (another no-no with a torn
piece (free -floating fragment) of disk moving around, and
went back to running, eventually upping my mileage to my
present day mileage of 9 (minimum) per day.Quoted message said:
I am sure an adjustment from a chiropractor would
cure him....2 years they said I had a mass on my ass the size of a
grapefruit. After consulting with an oncologist I decided to
forego the nasty "ass-penetration tests", and went to a
chiro. 2 weeks later all symptoms, and the "mass" were gone.
The oncologist (one of the most respected in his field)was
at a loss to explain it. It simply was knotted up muscles.
