Where I live great cyclists enter cycling races. However there are many people where people doing triathlons simply want to complete a triathlon.
Some people will differ, but I am a big proprietor of buying good equipment. A good bike makes such a difference and provides additional motivation.
If you're competitive and you know for sure that you will only be riding for triathlon, then I'd recommend a multi-sport bike (more up-right seat angle). However, my experience has been that it's hard to know you'll only want to ride for the purpose of triathlon in which case I'd suggest a road bike.
As for training, I would also recommend riding long easy rides and using your running/swimming for your interval gains. Even though triathlons have the running leg last, I'd recommend doing cycling last in your training so that the muscles aren't as fatigued during the running leg which increases your chance of injury.
