While I was cleaning my bikes today (the road bike got a bit muddy in yesterdays rain, and its a nice day today) I incurred the worst injury i've ever recieved in 18 years of being a cyclist.

I was lubing the chain on the road bike.
Not Concentrating.
Finger under chain.
Tooth in each side of left fore-finger.
No pain UNTIL I noticed the blood.
THEN it hurt.
that was 16:45 now 20:07 and it still hurts!
Owwwwwwww!
My mate did a similar thing with a chainsaw...up a tree!!!...only it wasn't his finger, it was his throat!!!....he had to climb down the tree holding the wound together with his T-shirt!!!!!!....now I bet that hurt ;-) He did survive and has a scar that means he'll never need to buy himself another beer - no, not 'cos it'd just leak out either!!!
sounds nasty!!! worst injury I got was undoing a crank bolt and my spanner slipped off the crank extractor and my knuckles hit the chain ring resulting in nice big teeth sized lumps taken out of my knuckles!! Mark "davek" <[email hidden]> wrote in message "]news:[email hidden]...

Not nice. I've come close to doing the same thing a few times but never actually drawn blood. You have my sympathy.

I'm glad for you that it's the worst. I've generally broken bones. I've lost 3 teeth, broken 6 ribs, and fractured a hip.

Some comments:
A. Why does your bike hate you? B. You need a knife collection. Then the knives can do this kind of thing to you and the bike can go back to breaking you bones like God intended. C. HOW do you get a tooth in each side of the forefinger? Did the finger roll under the chain?

Indeed. Make it up with your bike soon. -- Mark South: World Citizen, Net Denizen
at least you have derailliuer gears, s the chain tension is not too much, compared to a single speed or fixed wheel chain .... that does hurt A LOT

Indeed it did go under the chain. I suppose I was lucky that:
a) it wasn't going around very quickly,
b) it was on the sprung side of the cycle, where the slack in the chain is taken up by the derailleur, and
c)I have a narrow finger!
My bike doesn't hate me, I'm just a bit butter fingered at the moment.

Don't try that on a fixed. The chain has no give and can take your finger off

One of my sister's schoolfriends was known as "Stumpy" Carr because she took the top of a finger off doing this.

That's a regular for me. Everytime I service a bike or do any bike related work, I lose chainring tooth shaped bits of skin from my knuckles.

Interesting one (with a most interesting gear-change mechanism) in the VeloVision I received this morning.

I once knew a very unsuccessful motorbike thief who lost a finger cleaning a motorbike chain in a similar way.
