  1. I am a multisport athelete looking for some opinions on pedalling technique. After three months of training on my road bike I have developed a case of IT Band Syndrome. Pain was first felt after about 90 minutes on the bike early in the spring. But it was minimal.

It got worse, until I was not able to run for more than 5 minutes and bike for 30 minutes. I'm now out of commission for 3 to 5 weeks until it settles down and I get the physiotherapy needed.

I noticed while spinning through the pain one day that if I made a concerted effort to push back in the saddle a bit more and push the pedals a bit differently the pain in the knee would lessen.

When I do get back on the bike I want to make sure I am spinning the pedals properly. I have been "set-up" on the bike properly with plumb-bob etc. Any help/adivce would be much appreciated as I don't want to go through this again!! Thanks!! Sharpey

If your bike has been set up well and with your injury in mind you should find that once the agravated tissues have calmed back down you can cycle far more comfortably.

I have suffered with ITB pain for years now, although thankfully it mainly affects my running (I'm not very keen on running).

Personally I find that if I have the saddle slightly further back taking some of the load of of my quads, my ITBs are a lot happier. I lifted the saddle to the highest sensible point (i.e not so high as to make my pelvis rock but not far from.) so that my knee joint was going through a smaller range of motion.

I also use an ice pack after any activity which I feel has aggravated my ITBs which speeds recovery significantly.

Good luck with the Physio and make sure to stick to any stretching program your given, it makes a massive difference.

    Hope that's of some use.

    Happy cycling,

  4. Thanks for the help. I'll be sure to follow the physio instruction to the letter. Sounds like moving the seat back a little may also help me. Best Regards, Sharpey!!
