My Doctor has prescribed a beta blocker to take first thing
in the morning and an ace inhibitor at bed time (for blood
pressure control) Do they do different things or are beta
blockers and ace inhibitors alternatives

They both work differently to lower blood pressure.

Thank you, Andrew, I understand what you say. However, if
my objective is to control my BP at a certain level, does
it matter whether I use a betablocker or an ace inhibitor
to achieve this? The reason I ask is that I get unpleasant
side effects (headaches, etc) with the ace inhibitor but
not with the betablocker and I would obviously prefer to
take the latter.

Depends on what all is going on with you.

You should inform your doctor about those side effects.
Perhaps s/he can change your ACE inhibitor to an ARB.
