  1. Long story short, woman drives over my bike with her
    Jeep Liberty.

I have called her insurance company and I guess an adjuster
will be contacting me. (He said "tomorrow or Monday" and I
said, "No, it will be tomorrow. I can't wait till Monday
just to find out what you're going to do about this.)

Meantime, I had Troy from mtbchick.com go over the bike. In
addition to a bent rear derailleur, bent/cracked wheel, f'd
up rear brakes, misc. other parts, the part of the rear
triangle to which the derailleur hanger attaches is bent,
Troy saw differences in width on all the pivots, and there's
flaking paint on the frame (on a bike less than a year old
that has never had paint issues). Apparently that signifies
the frame being bent. (Pardon if I got some of the terms
wrong; I think you get the idea. As usual, if I got a
concept wrong it's my bad and not the original source's.)

It's totalled. The above is some subset of the "best case
    scenario."

Hopefully, the insurance company won't jerk me around and
will just fork over the replacement costs, but ... well,
    we'll see.

The worst thing is, I've been so psyched about biking ...
I've been riding every day and getting mentally prepped for
a race ... and now this. Serious downtime. I'm having
trouble just realizing that I won't be able to ride this
    *weekend*.

    Sigh.

    Well.

Any ideas on decent full-suspension bikes under $2K? This
one was about $1.5K, and it worked well for me, although of
course I wouldn't know any better, anyway.

I like University Bikes in Boulder, but they only sell Trek,
Giant, and Specialized (or something like that) ... this
second time around, I'd like to be smart about it and really
try out some different designs. I may go right back to what
I had, but it's good to be educated.

Let the flame war begin ...

Giant NRS is actually a design by Specialized... says it
right on the frame. Nice, light bike for pure XC. The VT
series may be your ticket, though.

In Specialized, the Stumpjumpers are just plain nice! Some
of them have inertia-valve stuff on the Fox shocks that
supposedly filter out low-frequency bobbing. You may want to
look into the Enduro if you're doing more downhill and
    bigger drops.

Dudette! You omitted one tiny detail: HOW THE HELL DID
    /THAT/ HAPPEN?!?

Sorry to hear about your loss (as they say on NYPD Blue),
but it sounds like you'll score a new ride to ease the pain.
Hope her friggin' insurance company doesn't try to play
games, and just coughs up the dough to buy you a
*comparable* bike (even if it costs more than your old one).
This is VERY small potatoes to them.

    /THAT/ HAPPEN?!?

She was parked next to me. The trailhead was very crowded
with cars, people, and bikes, because this was the day for
our group ride (last one had 48 wimmins; some comparable
number showed up today.) People and bikes were all over the
place. I was talking to a new member next to my car; my bike
was standing on the rear wheel and fork, then tipped over. I
remember thinking, "I need to pick that up; dropping it on
the drivetrain side is bad," and about a minute later ...
the lady I'm talking to starts shouting, and I turn to see
the Jeep driver back over my bike, then, as she realizes
someone's freaking out, roll forward over it again.

My bike was close behind my car. She just wasn't paying
attention. How can you not notice that your rear tire raised
    by a foot???

The worst part is that this lady totally didn't get it. She
didn't understand why she would be liable and claimed that
my bike had been inside her parking spot lines (not true)
... I think to her, this was the equivalent of damaging an
    appliance, not a trusty steed.

Also, the damage didn't *appear* to be that bad. That is,
on casual inspection, the frame/triangle looked to be
intact. Of course, that's why I brought it to a skilled
mechanic. He found lots of signs of the pivots being
stressed sideways. It's easier to list the intact parts --
handlebars and that "lovely" duke fork -- than to list
what's definitely or possibly wrong. Anyway, I don't think
the driver had any understanding of the financial and
    emotional investment involved.

We'll see. I don't feel comfortable spending money till I
talk to them, at the very least. And as I said, I'm not
sure I want to run out and buy the same bike. I'd like to
look around some, even if I end up buying the same thing
    in the end.

    <snip bad stuff>

Arghh that sounds awful, nearly worse than getting it stolen
because you might have to argue which bits are 'unuseable'.
If it were me I'd try and get the whole thing replaced.
Stresses in the forks/handlebars etc might not show up now
but may have shortened there lifespan dramatically.

For $2K you could get the sweetest fully rigid SS...

Assuming you're looking at XC/trail FS, if it was my cash,
these are the bikes that I would be looking at:
Specialized Stumpy FSR Expert - $1850 without discs, $2170
with Marin Rift Zone - $1890 Kona Kikapu Deluxe - $1600
Orange 5 - Not sure what they sell for in the US, but
    should be in your budget

Isn't supergo or one of those huge mail-order shops
doing Turner Burners with a manitou shock for under
$1000? You should able to get a decent bike build with

That sucks! You were too calm. I would have ripped into that
women pretty harshly. But that's my 'A' temper personality.
You should have laid down next to the bike complaining about
your foot, then get a lawyer and go for the big $$$. OK, I'm
from NJ. They do that kind of stuff here.

For $2000 you should be able to pick up a decent FS. I tried
one of those Enduros with the "brain" shock and it was real
sweet. Don't limit yourself to a particular brand just
because its the only one your LBS sells. Go to other LBS's
and try out different brands. Then go back to your LBS and
have them special order it for you. I've done this in the
past and they will match the price plus you get to keep the
    LBS you like.

Wow. This exact same thing happened to me with my, less than
12 months old, NRS2. I feel your pain.

Trouble was that the woman in question was my
uninsured sister. I've only recently welcomed her back
    into the family.

Here's what happened with the insurance company when 'I'
reversed over my bike: Read the fine print. A bicycle isn't
a household appliance or furniture under 10 years old - as
detailed in the policy. My "full replacement" policy would
only reimburse me about 40% of the bikes retail value! Yep.
    That's what I thought.

I kicked up a fuss and even asked another guy at another
branch of the same company what he thought. He thought that
it was harsh and suggested that I write a letter of
complaint to head office. I didn't in the end. I moaned and
[censored] to the woman handling my claim and despite feeling
bad about making a fuss, I managed to increase the payout by
quite a few hundred dollars AND I demanded that they give me
the wreck (normally they would have retained it and sold it
off for what they could get) since the payout was so
'goddamned' low. I sold the parts on the wreck that I had no
use for (rear shock, bars, rear disc brakes etc) for another
couple of hundred. I then used the other bits to upgrade an
old bike that I didn't use. I use it as a second bike now
but I could have sold it off for $700 with the upgrades!

In the end I still didn't get nearly full replacement but I
did get, by hook or by crook, a decent beater/loan bike, a
few more dollars and a 'cheap' new bike.

    Noooo...Sorry!

"The FSR was developed with Horst Leitner of AMP and in 1998
Specialized bought several important patents from Leitner,
including the 'Horst link' that in effect makes many multi-
link suspension designs work well. Since then, Specialized
has licensed the Horst link to numerous companies and the
    FSR to about eight."

    From cyclingnews.comtech30nov.shtml

The sticker on the Giant is the patent sticker from
Specialized. They didn't design it but they were smart
enough to cash in on a great design. The key to it is a
chainstay pivot that is lower than the rear axle. This
causes the suspension to 'stiffen up' under hard pedaling
    reducing bob.

Ouch! And a Jeep Liberty no less. What an ignoble demise for
    a loved steed.

As usual, pay attention to the fit of the bike, and don't be
afraid to ask for changes in the Grips, Pedals and Seat when
shopping. Those are your major contact points with the bike,
and they should feel perfect for you. Also, swapping stems
and bars is no big deal at the time of the sale.

Any changes or modifications to the new bike are best dealt
with at the time of the sale, as you'll get a much better
financial deal at that point. (My bike came with generic
clipless pedals, and I got some Carbon Time's ATACs for $70
Canadian. Did the same with the fork, upgraded to a Bomber
    at the time of purchase.)

Bike shops are usually pretty flexible when asked nicely
at the time of purchase, or if it is a make or break
    decision factor.

Take your time, get all the details of the new bike sorted
out, then have fun buying your second generation bike.

    Oh... that blows!

Well, at least you'll hopefully score a new bike! That's
    always fun.

Your LBS sells Giants - which I'm partial to. A VT2 (general
XC riding) sells for right around $2k and is decently
    spec'd. Or a '03 VT1. giantbicycles.com030.0
    00.000/030.000.006.asp?dealerid=&dealercountry=&lYear=2004&-
    bikesection=8841&range=156&model=10801

The Giant NRS1 (general XC, but more for racing than the VT
series) sells for around $1800. giantbicycles.co-giantbicycles.co-
    m/us/030.000.000/030.000.006.asp?dealerid=&dealercountry=&l-
    Year=2004&bikesection=8841&range=160&model=10819

I've been riding and racing my NRS Air for a couple years
now and it's treated me great. It takes a real beating. In
the 2 years I've had it, it's gotten over 14000 miles plus
around 21 races and is still running strong.

Some of the new Specialized bikes have been getting great
    reviews too.

Many people will tell you to go custom to get the best bike
you can. However, you often just can't get a good (complete)
bike for the same amount of money. Giant makes some great
stuff and packages their bikes well, bang for buck. And as
previously mentioned by others, a hardtail will get you even
more bang for your buck. But it depends on your preference,
    and riding style.

Personally, I race my Giant the most. I've recently built up
a custom hardtail which I love (however since it was custom
built it did run me a hefty sum of money), and I also train
on a rigid singlespeed and a cross bike turned road bike.
The different types of suspension all provide for very
    different rides.

Anyway, good luck with the insurance and have fun picking
    out a new ride!
