Barring disasters, I should be starting a new job in about 5 weeks. The new job is in Leadenhall, quite close to the Lloyds building, bringing my daily commute to abt. 10 miles (one way). Questions: on the way to the City from East Finchley, is there any area I should avoid? I remember reading that the roads near the Angel are rather dangerous for cyclists; any other places I should give a wide berth? Also, I've never cycled in the City on weekdays: is it as frantic as it looks?
Finally, what's the crime rate around there, bike-wise? The new company offers secure bike parking (underground, with security personnel and CCTV! Yay!), but I usually stop on the way in and out for espresso and emergency dinner shopping...

It's a bit crazy in the City during the rush hour. I don't find drivers much of a problem, but pedestrians are a problem when they don't cross the roads at the traffic lights but wherever they want. Be careful because not all of them see you and not all of them are friendly.
As for the crime rate, I don't know.

In days of old I used to do Stoke Newington - Bloomsbury through that area and it didn't seem too bad, but perhaps I was young, foolish and lacking imagination...

Since the Kengestion Charge was introduced it's been a fair bit quieter. Though the peds are a menace to life and limb, as they all seem to assume that:

In my experience it's worth taking the time and using the excellent CTC maps to find a good route. The main roads in the City are a bit manic, but is is usually possible to find a decent cycle friendly alternative.
