Check them out at http://www.polar.fi if you havent already.
cheers

I don't know about the newer models, but the Polar A5 that I had required servicing at a Polar authorized service center to change out the battery in the chest transmitter strap. That kinda stinks.I ended up selling the Polar A5 on ebay and had enough left over to purchase a Sports Instruments ECG 5 from Nashbar. They were only $45 (less 10% coupon) + shipping at the time. It's an older closeout model and is a little bulky but it has some extra features that I find useful. Nashbar no longer sells them for that price but Supergo had them for $50 not too long ago.
Features of SI ECG5:
[list]User replaceable battery in transmitter strap
[list]Time Spent in, above and below target zone
[list]Handlebar mount (Polar's is $10 extra)
[list]Lap function
[list]Price 😄 -

Got it last year, so this is my second full season. I've just leave the watch on the handlebar all the time; have used it for around 3500 miles now. The batteries are still good. Was about $40 from Performance early last year, including the handlebar mount.

shming123,
Nashbar currently has a closeout on an older Sigma Sport PC1300 for $35 + shipping. If DHK recommends that brand then I'd trust it. Looks like it has a user replaceable battery in the transmitter strap too.
You'll have to dig around on this website to find info on that model but it is there... http://www.sigmasport.com/index_usa.html
Here's the PDF... http://www.sigmasport.com/media/produkte/pulscomputer/Sportline/e_pc1300.pdf
Features:
Compatible with most gym equipment, this 13 function Heart Rate Monitor comes with a chest strap and handlebar mount. Functions include Pulse, Clock, Stopwatch, Date, Alarm, HR upper and lower limit set, Audible out of zone alarm, training time in/out of zone, max HR, Average HR, Calorie count, Recovery function, and Fat grams burned. Additional benefits include: User replaceable battery and 100% water resistant.
