You got it. 3" travel is still fairly common for XC riding
(4" more prevalent nowadays probably); "freeride" or "all
trails" bikes now come with 5 or 6" travel suspensions, and
downhill bikes even more.

Generally one pairs front and rear travel on FS bikes, so
that a 3" rear suspension is mated to an 80-mm fork; and 4"
to 100-mm.

A bike with 8" travel means that you only travel 8 inches
uphill before you get tired of pedaling it.
