Hi Jeremy, My husband has had macular edema for years. It IS
NOT diabetes-related, although I understand it can be. He is
considered young for this condition. Steve was in his early
40s when the condition was discovered. We think he has had
it since childhood. It became a real problem, because he
also had cataracts which needed to be removed. They were
very cautious about doing so, because macular edema can be a
result of the surgery.When the cataracts became so bad that
he could no longer drive at night, his opthamologist went
ahead with the surgery. His retina specialist is very
conservative about treatment and is following him carefully.
The first retina specialist we consulted messed him up with
steroid eye drops which caused his pressures to go way up.
We were referred to another guy who is very good and very
conservative with treatment. Steve is the youngest patient
he has ever seen with this particular problem.

I have macular edema, but it seems to respond well to
keeping my blood glucose level as low as possible. As the
lasaring I had in my left eye for the edema occurred right
before I had hemmorghages in he left eye, resulting in no
focus , only peripheral vision in that eye, I am not
choosing to try any more lasaring. My retinologist goes
along with me, saying, although it should not be a causal
relationship, it is possible that an underlying, unseeable,
blood vessel weakness in the left eye was exacerbated by the
lasaring. I just watch the blood glucose numbers like a hawk
and have check-ups every 3-4 months.

Sorry to not have more cheerful news and I he no idea about
this edema when not acompanied by diaetes. Just u of
interest, I do not have much non-proliferative retinopathy,
and have no proliferative retinopathy, just this edema. As
we say in this group, YMMV

No.. I have further advanced bleeding into the center of the
right eye.. There has been times of swelling also.

I am trying to get more information on macular edema, seen
the eye specialist all ready but probably will need further
treatment.. Need to be ready to go in with questions about
my further treatment options.

When i went to go seem him the 1st visit, which was on
referrel from my GP, I got the Dialation test done and he
said he noticed diabetic changes in my eye.. But dumb-
founded me, I never ask any questions, because I was at the
time in very much pain in both my eyes and from foot surgery
about a month earlier.

Going to call today for a new appointment to see what he
says.. He suggest at the appointment that in a couple weeks
I should come back to see if after the anti-biotics had done
there job, that my bleeding might heal in the eye or that
from there we might have to do surgery to remove the
pressure in my eye..

That ok.. I have had to deal with disappointments like this
the past couple of years from a # of diabetic infections and
complications.. Because of not doing what I needed to my
first 10 of 13 or so years as a diabetic, I am getting the
results earlier than I expected..

Basically 10 years of on and off again Very High BG for
periods of time..

I can see out of this Right on the sides but in the middle
there is bleeding.. It has been there about a month now and
getting very worried about it..

Current Meds.. Type II Diabetic

Avandia Lisiniprol Insulin Lantus 48 units 24 units 2X a
day.. 400 mg of Ibuprofen as needed for pain

Not currently on Metformin of any kind as I used to be on
about 4 months ago.. Insulin is now my main controller of
Blood Sugars along with Exercise and Control of Eating

I am very concerned because my mother, who is 86, lost most
of her eyesight due to "macular degeneration" that sounds
identical to Wendy's description--no central/just peripheral
vision--in February. She says she is not diabetic, but she
is obese and has the apple body shape and is Native
American. I am newly diagnosed as Type 2, obese, and also an
apple shape. I thought I had depression due to stress, but
with the new lower blood sugar recommendations, I am now
considered a full Type 2 diabetic. Now I want to know just
what her "normal" sugar levels have been. My vision has been
more off since starting the meds than it ever was before, so
I'm also afraid of the meds.

Hi there Pinecone,

I am so sorry to hear that your 86 year old mother has lost
her sight do to "Macular Degeneration.."

I'm a 28 yr old type 2 diabetic who's dealing with
infections that seem to come and go.. Along with bleeding in
my right eye which I hope to go see my eye spec. to see what
he think is the next thing to with my prob...

I was wondering as a standard quuestion.. What have you
Blood sugars been running?
