For me ( a beginner) I try and ride as much as possible.....

Because of different types of training, averages won't make much sense....

slow long rides for aerobic strength short sprints for fun... averages don't mean anything really....

Ride at a pace where you're not puffing, but where you may start to puff if you went a little bit faster...slow down if you are puffing....

I only ride hard once a week for 20 minutes at race pace... and that may be over doing it...

I read somewhere that you can get by on training at 66% of what you want to do in a race....

With interval training you train your hear to respond.... fast paces and slow paces....

There are a million ways to train and if you're not sure when your starting out get a book and follow that....

Lance's 7 week training plan covers beginners...get that and see what you think....

start out slow, build up gradually, rest if you're tired or injured and monitor your progress....

Put it in a diary or on your computer...

Schedule your training like appointments to the dentist.... you don't want to do it but you have to type training.... but make it fun and enjoy...

Even a simple 30 minutes a day may be enough to start on....

study, and see what works best for you....

I'm sure others can give better advice as I'm just rambling on....

    off...

  3. During winter (our road season) i try to get up around 500km (depends on goals, work, weather etc) a week which normally takes about 17-20hrs (just under 30km/hr) depending on weather conditions, terrain etc. During summer track season i normally train minimally but with a much higher intensity and lower work rest ratio. Maybe doing 200km-300km on the road with at least 2 track sessions a week that may be up to 2hrs in length, but im only riding for about half of that as there is a lot of very intense efforts and a similar amount of rest (on or off the bike) for each effort.
