Hi Skip. The Ryan is a nice bike. The owner however removed
the seat horn[ala vision] and IMO this made for a
uncomfortable ride.

I have ridden a Vanguard horned and hornless and found no
remarkable difference.

I was surprised to find the Green Gear Double Day's mesh
seat to be 'horned'. Still comfortable.

The incredible (at least to me) all day, day after day
comfort of the Ryan seat comes from the sling mesh pocket
formed by the recline angle of the seat, the adjustable
velcro'd straps, and last but not least, the seat horn. I've
ridden my Ryan with the seat horn accidentally disconnected
and noticed immediately that something was wrong. I felt as
if I was sliding forward out of the seat.

It takes a good deal of trial and error to find your
personal sweet spot with this seat. The original Ryan seat,
like mine, is a real pain in the butt to adjust the fore and
aft and recline positions. It's best as a one person bike
unless you happen to have an identical twin.

A friend of mine has an early production (2003) Double Day,
and in my opinion the stoker seat needs some refinement. One
concern was a slight downward tilt to the base, which caused
a tendency to slide forward. On this particular bike, the
situation was improved by the addition of an extra pad [1]
under the seat cover. I found recumbent butt to be somewhat
of a problem on this seat.

[1] Purchased from The Bike Rack in St. Charles, IL. It is
the material that they use for the seats on wheelchairs
and special physical needs HPV's.

Many have complained about the Vision seat horn over the
years, but that seat horn just makes the Vision seat in my
opinion. I have many recumbent bikes, all with different
type seats, but there is nothing that even comes close to
the Vision seat for all day comfort. It was a true stroke of
genius when that seat was designed. I would get the Vision
for the seat alone.

bikes, which will affect comfort in a positive manner for
most people. It would be instructive to hear a comfort
comparison from someone who owned either a R-30 or R-32
with their rather upright seating positions and a 40, 50 or
60 series Vision with the same design seat in a more
reclined position.

Yes, you are quite correct about how important the recline
angle is for the Vision seat. When I have set it fairly
upright, it is not particularly comfortable at all. But
when it is sufficiently reclined it is as good as it gets.
One other thing I had to do to get nirvana with the Vision
seat (besides getting the recline right) is to get a better
foam for the seat base. You do not want to ever feel that
seat horn.

I have never found an all mesh seat to be comfortable at
all. I will get recumbent butt after about a half hour on a
mesh seat. I have to get some foam on the seat base. The
RANS seat is also very good, but it is not as good as the
Vision seat.
