Anything can be overdone. Also, cats and other carnivores
have a digestive system conducive to more efficient
utilization of protein and fats, and also in the wild eat
enough to last for periods of no food.

The vet wants my cat to gain weight. Like people, cats are
different.

Hi Chris

Simple; by my personal diet definition "high" = "excessive".
"low"= "insufficient". High or excessive anything will make
you fat. Low or insufficient anything will deprive you of
nutrients.

Your cat eats too much of whatever it is that it eats.

The word I prefer for diet is moderation. The problem is
that everybody's definition of moderation may differ; no
problem - you test with your meter, your scales and your lab
results to find your own definition.

Back to the first question; this cat is fat because it's
owner overfeeds
it.

is good for losing weight. If you lose weight with Atkins,
you burn more calories than you store. If you gain weight
with Atkins, you burn less than you store.

Although I suspect that cats haven't got the same metabolism
as people, but have to comply to the same rules, and your
cat has no special metabolic diseases, just take care to
feed him less and let him exercise more. Go chase them

LOL, I have 3 cats. One is fat, one is skinny, and one is
'just right'. They all eat the same thing. I think they
should be the 3 bears instead of the 3 cats.

The atkins idea is to never confuse me with facts. There are
many contradictions. It is more like a religious cult than a
health idea.

Catnip filled, not real mouses. Tapeworms could be the
result. Although it may make the cat lose weight, it's not
the way to do it. Keep kitty inside for it's own safety.

My cats love a tinfoil ball on a string. Up the hall, down
the hall, up the hall, down the hall. Fifteen or so minutes
of that and we're all pooped out.

IMO it is not because it leads to an imbalace of one or more
types of food. Higher protein, higher fat and lower carb. A
diabetics chemistry set is already suffering imbalance,
imposing further imbalance cannot be good.

Look on the label of your cat's food. The dry stuff will

I once had a cat that loved to play fetch with a rolled up
empty(of course) pack of cigarettes with the plastic still
on. She would chase it down, slide across the floor and even
slide or dive under the furniture to get it then bring it
back and put it in my hand. She'd do this till she wore my
arm out then move on to my spouse and wear out that arm.
Then the kitty would curl up and sleep in my lap for the
rest of the evening or day.

We did have to be careful when we had hardwood floors and
the pack would be thrown to close to a wall. You would here
the skittering of claws on wood as she took off, then the
sliding across the floor when she tried to break, followed
by the thump as she connected with the wall. Sometimes I
think she would do it just because she liked to collide
with the wall.

Dry cat food is cereal based. Maui's vet said dry food is
the best for cats. I do give her those little teensy cans of
expensive food once daily, just because I like to spoil her.
But even those have some cereal in them. The really cheap
canned food has even more cereal in it, even though it
appears to be just meat or fish.
