McAllister's rule states that anytime a swimmer goes a
lifetime best in the 800 free on the first day of a meet,
he/she will swim the 400 the next day (800 day one and 400
day 2 is a common meet schedule sequence) at exactly the
same pace as he/she swam the 800 the day before.
At the ongoing TYR Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo,
Chad Carvin once again proved the rule (which I have
observed over the years to be uncannily correct most
times). On Day one of the meet, he swam a lifetime best
7:59 in 800 (an "off" event for this 200/400 specialist).
He must have been pretty pumped up to get a personal best
at age 30. He outswam both Larsen Jensen and Justin
Mortimer in posting this time. But the next day he went
4:00 in taking 5th in the 400.
McAllister, by the way, is Bud McAllister, who coached Janet
Evans to 3 Olympic golds and WRs and who now coaches in
Waterloo, Ontario.
