  1. I'm a youngish (33) male, I run about 4 miles a day, several
days a week (that's on a good week, mind you), I wear normal
clothing when I run, I'm quite trim and fairly muscular, and
I run with what I consider to be a normal, dignified gait.
In other words, I don't look like a 160-pound serving of Jell-
O riding on a flatbed truck with suspension problems.

Why, then, am I constantly being honked and (sometimes)
shouted at and by passing motorists when I run? Many of
these honks seem to be coming from female motorists, which
    is good, but not all.

I guess my question is really a rhetorical one; after all,
how is anyone here supposed to divine the innermost thoughts
of motorists in my town? I guess I'm just wondering if this
is something that all runners experience.

    Thank you,

    Judas

I think we all experience this from time to time. There's
really nothing you can do about it other than learn to deal
with it. I choose to ignore it as best I can. Or, if they
are yelling obsenities, a friendly wave and a smile usually
catches them off guard. This works especially well for me,
since it's usually my wife yelling the obsenities at me as
    she's driving by.

Yes, I experience it and my wife no longer likes to run with
me because of our experiences. I could tell you some amazing
stories in addition to being yelled at. She now only runs on
a treadmill. It is usually teenagers. I dont know what to
tell you really, it's part of it.

  4. You're a jogger. Get used to people pointing, laughing, and
generally being mean spirited towards you. Oh, and the
    spiderman costume doesn't help either.

You really don't need to tell me anything more; you've
already told me what I need to know, which is whether this
is something we all experience. I'm sorry your wife no
longer wishes to run with you, as it's a lot more fun to run
with someone whose company you enjoy.

yup, just accept it and live with it, and learn NOT to get
worked up by the crazies out there. for me, it's often
teenagers who get their jollies yelling at me while hanging
out of the car windows as they fly by. i just act like
    nothing happened.

the only time i get steamed is when someone nearly hits me.
that's when i'm ready to slam my fist down on their hood to
make a point. i'm sure i'll get the [censored] kicked out of me
someday for that, but i'm ready to do
it.... too many inconsiderate jackasses out there who at
least need to be told what they are doing wrong... just
    before they annihilate me.

    ....

I've had this happen a few times before. Some of them just
yell out nothing in particular. I've just learned to ignore
it. So far, nothing's been thrown at me.

If you do a search of the archives on this group, you see
cases where stuff has been thrown at runners. Beer bottles,
    stones, etc...

One thing you could do, just in case, is to note down the
    license plate number.

On a related note, there was this one time when I was on the
trails. A teenager on his bicycle wanted to race
me. I was doing loops and he kept bugging me each time we
passed. So, in the end, I raced him. We raced about 100
meters. I had him beat till about 75-80 meters. He
overtook me in the last 25 meters or so. He quieted down
    a little bit after that.

imagine how much passing a full sized motorist would hurt...

what some zit-faced little punk thinks about anything. I was
just very curious as to whether this is something we all
experience, and it sounds like it's pretty common, at least
judging by the responses to my posts.

I do like it when the women honk, though . . .

IIRC, it was somewhere in Texas. I could be wrong.

It's Karl with a 'K'. I'll thank you to get it right.

    If you're a motorist--and I'm assuming you are--and she's
your mom, then she passed you; i.e., she gave birth to you.
What she was trying to tell you is that it hurt.
