There seems to be a lot written about fore-aft foot
placement when running (landing on the heel Vs. the ball
over the center of gravity), but my question is in regards
to the lateral placement of the foot under the body when
running. I'm a bit bow legged and when I see race pictures
of myself, my feet seem to be positioned directly under
the centerline of my body when I run when viewed from the
front or rear.
Looking at pictures of myself and other runners who run like
this, it seems the recovery foot has to swing around the
planted foot for every stride, and then swing back towards
the center before striking the ground. This seem terribly
inefficient, and I wonder if it contributes to the shin
splints I've been plagued with all my life. When doing
interval training at the track, I notice that the feet of
the faster runners when viewed from behind (where I always
seem to be) seem to drop directly down and not go towards
the center.
Does anyone know where I can find more information about
this or does anyone in the group have any comments they'd
like to share on the topic?
thanks, Frank
