  1. Hello everyone. I am newbie to this forum, and a beginner cyclist. The other day I managed to break a spoke on my back wheel. I was wondering what I should do about it. Should I have it repaired, or is not a big deal (it's technically a mt. bike, but I only ride on paved trails for now)? Can I replace it myself, or is it a pro's job? I think the spoke actually snapped off at the wheel, and part of the attachment of the spoke is still in the wheel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Get it replaced at bike shop, it won't cost much (-$10)

While you are at the shop having them replace the spoke ask them if there have been quality issues with this particular brand of wheel... and spokes.
Also have them stress relieve the spokes to help prevent future breakage.

    "SinginKate",

Yeah, follow Dave Ornee's advice. As a general recommendation if you have this same thing happen 3 or 4 times it gets to the point that it is not cost effective to keep doing one spoke at a time and you should consider having the wheel rebuilt by a reputable builder.

Kate, it's no biggie...these things happen...in fact the same thing happened to me, my LBS replaced the broken spoke and re-tuned/trued the wheel for, I think, less than $20.00

It is possible to do it yourself, but you really need a truing stand and a spoke wrench etc to do it right...plus a lot of experience to do it fast...in my opinion it's not worth while for the sake of saving $20...
