I use a Maxon 49-hx when I play paintball ... it's OKay. It
was originally meant for Motorcycles. The headset can come
apart so you can Velcro the earpiece and the mic to the
inside of the helmet, and it can be set for Vox operation,
or PTT with a very nice remote PTT button designed to be
mounted on handlebars. Something along those lines is what
you want ... take a look at motorcycle shops and catalogs,
they'll have something.

A good time to ask the question, as the BMHA (Bicycle Mobile
Hams of America) has just finished indexing our newsletter
back-issues. There is not a lot on helmet-mounted
microphones, but there is some interesting information
(search the newsletter index by the topics "Gear" or
"Product Review", some under "Letters"😉. My own personal
choice is an in-the-ear microphone/speaker combination (yes,
there is nothing in front of my mouth).

The BMHA website is at lafetra.comBMHAOpen ↗ and you
should easily be able to navigate to the subject index of
backissues. The site is geared toward bicycling ham-radio
operators (which requires an FCC license), but much of the
microphone/antenna technology can be adapted to FRS,
Citizen's Band, or other unlicensed radio services.

I've used Maxon and Radio Shack helmet intercoms in the
past, and they worked okay; I imagine the new models are a
good deal better. Nady seems to be the hot name in bike-to-
bike intercom manufacturers these days.
