  1. I have just bought the Tacx i-magic for training but intend to use it on 4-5 June to do 24 hours non stop (except for comfort breaks) outside Tescos at Camberley to collect money for the Paul Bevan Hospice in Ascot.
Does anyone know how I can either create a country course that will run more or less indefinitely? It appears to me that the track course is the only way of doing that. Also, for that event I am looking for a fairly flat coarse!!!

  2. I'm not sure how you do it, but if you post your question on the forum at:
    http://www.i-magicleague.com/
I'm sure you'll get an answer as there are several course designers there. I also seem to remember someone else trying what you are going to do (or maybe it was you?!) a year ago.

  3. .

  4. Thanks for the advise. I have checked the site and you are probably right but I cannot find any way that I can leave a message there. Since posting my question it has occurred to me that I want to build a course in the fens that simulates a moonlit night with high pressure, slightly warm and with a slight following wind!!!!

You go to the home page, and click on the PHPBB (or whatever) logo in the middle of the page. Then register, and post. To get you started, I've posted your request there.

  6. You seem to be a great guy or Guyess! Thanks for that. It is late now so I will pick it up in the morning.
    Regards,
    David

  7. Dear Shibumi,
Thanks for the help. I have now been onto the site and sent them an email explaining my requirement. Hopefully, if I get a result I will let you know.
    Regards,
    David

No problem. In case you haven't seen the responses, here they are:

He could always use NetAthlon. He will have ten days free trial of all the courses, which are many an varied. I would think it would be the best choice for this type of ride. A flat couse is New England it is long and if he were to put unlimited laps in he could go forever
There have been some long distance rides on this Software. And has proved reliable for over 5 hours of riding. You can also use pacers (I have used up to 15 in a ride) which if the drafing is switched on gives a good break. This is possible as you can make them Ultra Rabbits. These keep to the pace you are riding speeding up and slowing down to your pace.
The Tacx Software could be a problem however.
A chap from Fisher Outdoor who import the Tacx, told me that when they had a couple at a show, the Tacx software started playing up after a few hours and they found that it needed to be restarted to make it work correctly. Not good.

I think the chap I was talking to was talking about Capricorn. I was telling him I had problems when all four of us were riding one after the other in the virtual tour.
Catalyst I suppose is less intensive on graphics and computer resources.

  9. My suggestion is that you could just ride free, by attaching the steerer. Obviously this requires you to be more alert, and will mean keeping your hands on the bars for most of the 24 hours, which is probably not what you want.

(By the way, if you want a tip, you can get a break by having supports at either side of the bike. For example, I use the tops of two dining chairs. Grabbing hold of these during a long turbo ride eases the pressure on your back, and you can also transfer a bit of weight through your arms and away from the saddle...)

  11. Thanks for all the advise. This is a great site. I will try the NetAthalon suggestion. I think I have more or less used up the 10 days since I loaded it so must get a move on.

  12. I have not tried Catylist yet. Seems for all the advice I am getting I am spoilt for choice. Thanks to all.

  13. So how did it go? I've just got back from a weekend away to see you staring out from the 'Wokingham Standard'.

    🙂

Really well thanks in as much that I made it. But not without incident. Two problems. First I was placed in the Atrium outside the building under a glass roof with the sun blazing down. I have no idea of the temperature between 12.00 Friday until it mercifully went below the glass level. They could not move me due to power access difficulties. The second was that after about 14 hours a colleague of mine spotted that somehow I was pushing more resistance than I should have been and adjusted the pressure on the back tyre. My average speed immediately went up by 3 miles per hour so how many miles that cost I have no idea. Apart from that, no problems. Of interest, until the time of the pressure adjustment the programme had not crashed once soi it had run for 14 hours and may have continued, who knows? We reset it then just to try and get the resistance right. From advice I had received, no one had any experiance of it running for more than 5 hours. I think that maybe there were two factors that helped me there. Firstly I had switched off the steering and secondly I had constant gradient. It is likely I think that both of these may be memory hogs. Other factors include having set virtual memory to 3 Gig. Iam told by the Chief Technologist at NetAthalon that this is the maximum that will make any difference and also perhaps having set one pacer to constant speed and the other to constant power. Possibly Ultra Rabbits may take more memory if the are speeding up and slowing down.
The other matter of interest maybe to a cyclist is that my weight was 14Lb higher when I finished than it is now, one and a half days later and 9Lb higher than when vI started the event, meaning that I actually lost a real 5Lb but had absorbed the extra weight in excess fluid. Just shows how difficult it is to judge proper hydration levels. Anyway, thanks for the interest and you help. Made a very big difference.
