i have a GT agressor prolly about 6 years old. i put it in the shop to get tuned for the first or second time of it's existance. def not a good thing. However the only serious problems were the cabling/housing of the rear brake. 5 dollars max replacement. also i somehow lost both air caps on the tires.
i decided to upgrade a few parts i got toe clips on the pedals, and a nicer seat. as i've grown and it is not a comfy one.
i'm taking the beast into the great city of boston next year to use more frequently. any recomendations to things i could upgrade in the future when i atain more money.
i was thinking a U lock for obvious security reasons. a rack on teh back for carrying back groceries. or a mud flap.

U Lock and cable lock both ... and use both properly. It makes your bicycle a little less attractive to potential bike thiefs. Look at bicycles locked up in your city to see what they use to discourage ripping off other items from bicycles. A QR on your seatpost may be nice, but it welcomes even the most casual pilfering. Rack and some "townies" bags for the grocery shopping trips. Fenders may look geeky, but they cerainly add to utility. Pump, tire levers, and a spare tube are a good idea. Practice using them... as you will get flats. Evaluate your tires for suitability to your application. Front and rear lights are a good idea for rides during darkness. KoolStop Salmon color brake pads to replace what ever you have. Most bicycle shops have "Idea listings" that will help with additional items I am sure that there are other items, but the ones I listed are what came to mind.
I'm thinking of buying a GT Aggressor 3 '05... would you recommend the Aggressor? (Although it's an MTB, I'll actually be using it for city commuting & light off-road.)
I've found a backpack to be invaluable. Get it sized so it sits comfortably, when fully packed, between top of shoulders (so your head/neck isn't rammed forward) and to rest at the top of your bottom. It's particularly useful for taking into the grocery store with you, so you can measure your load on the fly.
A u-lock's great for convenience and short stops. I would use a cable for longer visits (like, say a visit to the movies). Both are well worth saving up for.
