Yes and fair do's to the paper as well - they've given him a fair crack there, not like these tiny columns you see tucked away apologising for some front page headline that later turns out to be totally false.

I am suitably abashed! Sorry Simon - most amiss of me. I grovel in apology!

All that matters is that the result fits on a single line, which it does. Other sites Make An Even Shorter Link but that's just showing off.
Quoted message said: qurl.net does do what makeashorterlink.com has on the tin.
I like tinyurl.com myself because it quickly takes you directly to the destination site with no intermediary 'this link brought to you by' page - these services are self- advertising anyway.

No, it does exactly what it says. It makes a shorter link. Not a very short one necessarily, but a shorter one. Short enough to fit on a line.
Unless by "shorter link" you have something like this in mind: cycleweb.co.uk sth19.htm Open ↗ .

But if you feed tinyurl.com a qurl.net link, it makes a longer link! What nonsense!

But that's not saying it's shorter: only that it's short
