  1. Sorry, what is SS?

I see it mentioned here a few times...

And what is good or bad about it?

Single-speed - for mtb purist luddites

To be entirely accurate, the purist luddites would ride a
rigis single-speed, while the plain old luddites may put on
a sus fork. Some luddites even ride rigid geared bikes, but
are looked down upon by both styles of SS riders.. ;-(

Your bike is simpler and lighter, and if you like to hit
jumps or ride rough terrain, your chain will not come off.
And you no longer have a derailleur flopping around,
    smacking your chainstay.

It really depends on your style of riding and your need for
    gears (or not).

I'm thinking about building one with front sus, and hydro
disc. Then again, maybe fully rigid, with some Avid mechs.
    Have not decided.

Understood and thanks. For most of my ride around the
Claremont Wilderness Park I can stay in the middle chain
ring but I do still need at least (2) rear gears (prolly
    middle and top).

    I'm a 43 y/o riding a 21 lb cannondale f300 frame with an
ultra headshok, TOTAL xtr with mavs and white ind. hubs

    yeah i love my HT

That's why I'm thinking of going that way. The Voodoo frames
are now available, and my old frame, the Wanga (my first
true love in mtb'ing, is now offered as the 'Wanga One'. The
dropouts can be changed to accommodate a derailleur, but
would love to have an SS to go with my geared bike. I'm in
the researching stage, trying to figure out what I want to
    build it up with.
