  1. I use Memory Map Navigator because it is easy to use and has
3D capabilities. I also use OziExplorer because it is so
much more sophisticated wrt GPS interfacing. Has anyone had
any experience with Ozi3D? Height data is provided free
courtesy of the US, but the implementation looks
complicated. If anyone has used it with UK maps I would be
interested to know, because I am getting seriously [censored] with Memory Map, or should I say the restrictions placed
on the software because of our wonderful Ordnance Survey.

    Chris,

Give Trailgauge a try, there's a free demo version that's
very functional in its own right available on the website
    trailgauge.co.uktrailgauge.co.uk I'm not sure what you're looking
for, but it has a similar 3D view to Anquet's (and much
better than MM's) but much more GPS functionality and can
work with your own maps (not just UK). The height data is
SRTM, automatically downloaded once you've calibrated your
map. If it's not quite what you're looking for, please let
me know as I'm always willing to add new features if they're
likely to be of general appeal.

Implementation isn't that complicated you just need to
install Ozi-3D and put the DEMs in a folder and tell Ozi-3D
where they are and what type they are. You get an extra menu
item in Ozi to bring up a 3-D map control box and select the
are you want in 3-D and teh level of detail you want and the
SW does the rest. It's a bit hard to fly through the
landscape with it, I haven't figured out an easy way to get
a view from a point but it gives good visualisations of the
    landscape.

I posted something on a fix for the holes in the SRTM data
a month or so ago in a thread with the subject "New GPS for
Old" but here is the link again

Hello Chris, I'm also using MM. I don't feel the need to
defend a profit making company but what's the problem with
it? I ask because there are ways around some of the problems
And it feels good to get one over the big guys :-)

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

Thanks also for this. I will definitely give it a try.

The main gripes I have at the moment are with:

    1. Printing. Having finally got an update to MM4 which
will actually print at all with Win98, there is no way
when printing a route to alter the width of the route
itself, or the size of the waypoint. In MM3 it was
acceptable, but with MM4 the route obliterates the map
detail. I cannot help wondering if this is by design,
    to satisfy the OS!

    2. Frequently I find my route liesg partly on the the
1:25,000 Peak District map, and partly off it. So my
route goes into white space! If I could add scanned or
other mapping then I could get around this. But this
facility has been removed from MM4 for the OS edition. I
could use the US edition, but that won't work with OS
maps. I could use MM3, but this won't work with my
    1:25,000 map.

Consequently, I much prefer OziExplorer, but I do find the
3D viewing very useful when planning routes.

Sorry I can't help you, maybe someone on here knows how to
"alter" the program with a Hex editor allowing more freedom.
Your first point is a problem I've experienced when printing
the waypoint ID on the maps, too big and obliterated parts
of the map I'd really rather be able to see.......
