New to grilling. Was wondering if any of you grillers out
there know of a good basic (how-to) book for beginners? I am
not looking for a lot of fancy stuff just how to operate the
grill, how to set temperature, use foil/no foil, when food
is done, and how to cook basic hot dogs/hamburgers/steaks,
etc. Once I get the hang of the basics then I can graduate
to higher level cooking, like more than one item at a time.

On 5/13/2004 1:01 PM Ted shuffled out of his cave and grunted these
great (and sometimes not so great) words of knowledge:Get an oven thermometer (many of the thermometers built into
the grills are inaccurate) and set it on the grill, not the
warming shelf. Turn your grill on and set your knobs for
medium. Wait about 8 - 10 minutes, open the grill and see
what the thermometer is reading. Adjust the knobs to get a
temperature for grilling for one type of food you will be
doing. You will need to wait a couple of minutes between
changes of the knobs to allow the grill to get to the next
temperature setting. Once you have achieved the temperature
you want for one type of food, mark the grill with a line
and some type of indicator for the line (ie C for chicken).
Repeat for other foods you plan on cooking. This will allow
you to light the grill, turn it to what you plan to cook,
wait about 8 - 10 minutes for it to warm up, then cook.Almost any grilling/cooking book can give you the
temperatures you need. The degree of doneness now will
depend on the amount of time ON EACH SIDE YOU COOK IT.You will also need to find out about hot spots and how fast
the grill cools down/come back up to temperature when the
lid is opened for turning, inspection, etc. You will find
these things out by trial and error - usually while cooking. The foil/no foil - for MOST items I prefer to cook them
directly on the grill. Delicate items (ie fish, certain
vegetables) I normally use foil either over the grill
surface or make a packet.Once you get the temperature settings it will mostly be
trial and error.
You will develop a skill/knack for it, it just takes a
little time.Quoted message said:

I second this. I bought the book as a gift for a friend who
had just bought a new grill, and I liked it so much I bought
a copy for myself.
