Are the electrodes you stick onto your chest useless once
they get wet (I'm talking about after they dry, of course).
Thanks.

Annia,
When those electrodes get wet, it would be best if you
replaced them with fresh ones (for an event recorder, extras
are typically provided).
However, your cardiologist would have the final say on this,
of course.

Are you talking about the things they use for an EKG? I
assume you also mean in a hospital setting where they are
already there and got wet. (If you had any doubts before
applying them to a patient, you would just throw them out.)
I would GUESS not. I don't see how their conducting
properties would be altered. If there were some residual
water around you might get more noise.
However, Dr. Chung might be especially qualified to comment.

Having worked in hospitals for years I can tell you that in
telemetry floors and the unit patients shower and get washed
with these electrodes in tack. Of course some stick better
than others under those circumstances. As long as they stick
and the conductive jelly (hard or soft) is not dry they
continue to give a tracing. I personally am one in favor of
changing them with a shower and relocating them a bit since
the patients skin gets irritated from the adhesive if worn
too long or in the same place.

I had some of these electrodes in place awhile. Every so
often nurses would come in and check if I was jumping about,
and ask what I was doing. This after 4 bypass. Seem's my
electodes were upside down. This after 2 days.
Reminds me that the loose nut in front of the machine can be
a problem. Yet another reason to give Nurse's and Doctor's
less time on so they can deal with important stuff.

Well I do have extra electrodes, which I replace on a daily basis.
The only problem is that after I work out I have to take a shower
...of course I take off the recorder, but I leave the electrodes on.
Now I understand that it would be ideal if I replaced them but:
1) I only have enough to replace them once a day.
2) Even if I did have more, my skin is getting really
irritated (i.e., a couple of areas of bleeding etc.,
despite trying to put them in different places), so I
really don't want to have to pull these things off more
than once a day.
The only other alternative would be to exercise without
the recorder, and then to put it on after the shower
...but I'm not happy with that solution ...if an event
were to occur at that point, I might not be able to record
it ...to me, it's not really worth the risk. Anyway ...I
don't know what to do.
Thanks again.

You could ask for more.

You could simply limit showering to once a day just after
exercising (your skin will thank you :-).

You are welcome, Annia :-)
