class and keep enough body fat to make insulin injections
comfortable. And the dietary things that many wrestlers do
to reach their so-called "ideal weight" are fairly insane
(which is why I was always at 10 pounds over what my coach
wanted, which actually left me stronger than the bean
poles who slimmed
down

When I won, it was usually because the beanpoles I fought
didn't have the endurance and I'd pin in the final round:
I'd been working my ass off and was fairly tough to pin,
and all the points in the world from the first
two

I went to school with two twins who were type 1. Their
sister would bring a bag of oranges to the wrestling match.
They'd have to wolf some down just prior to wresting, and
while they were on the mat, she'd be peeling more because
they'd be in such bad shape as soon as they got off the mat.
In those days, we didn't have meters. They'd have to judge
by how they felt whether or not they were hypo. I remember
the sister always being terrified that they would in fact
have a hypo.
My husband was also a wrestler when he was in school. He is
short and stocky and tends to put on weight. He said he used
to starve before the match and then eat nothing but small
amounts of cottage cheese and canned peaches during
wrestling season to keep his weight down.
