Just a quick question about sizing and OCLV Frame.
I'm being led to believe that if you normally ride a 56cm in most other frames, that a 58cm OCLV is actually the proper size to ride. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
I'm a 5'10" rider w/a 32" inseam, and typically ride 56cm c-c bikes.

Trek measures the OCLVs from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat collar -- and not the top (or center) of the top tube. So yes, the OCLV may be about 2cm shorter in the same nominal size. -- Jay Beattie.

Trek is one of the few frame makers using center-to-top sizing. And since the OCLV tubes are pretty thick, you're looking at probably at least 3/4" from the center of the top tube to the top of the tube. So yeah, 56 = 58 (Trek) is probably about right.
Dana: Trek OCLV framesets are measured from the center of the bottom bracket all the way to the top of the seat collar, which extends above the top tube by about a cm. So, a 60cm TREK is about the same size as most other 57cm center-to- center frames.
At 5'10", you're most likely a 58cm kind of guy (going by what we've sold in the past, which is quite a few of them). And if it makes you feel better, you're the same height as Lance and he rides a 58cm.

At 5'10", you're most likely a 58cm kind of guy (going by what we've sold in the past, which is quite a few of them). And if it makes you feel better, you're the same height as Lance and he rides a 58cm.

I'm a 6' kind kind of guy and ride a 58 oclv 5200. I thought Lance was 5'11", not that it really matters. There is more to it than just how tall one is.

I'm curious why they'd measure them that way - it seems to be a method of measurement that tells you nothing except perhaps the length of the seatpost you need.

I'm 5'11 with a 32" inseam and recently purchased a Trek 5200. I started with a 56, but during the bike fitting it became clear this was too small and my LBS obligingly swapped it for a 58 which fits me nicely. I do believe the OCLV frames run small, at least for someone like me in my late 50's whose body is not quite as flexible as it used to be. I don't know if this is a result of the way they measure their frames or the position they expect you to ride in.

The answer is a definite maybe. Seattube length means ohhh so little. Seattube ANGLE and top tube LENGTH is what matters. Rememeber a size '56' for one many=ufacturer can sometimes be vastly different in another, in terms of the two dimensions mentioned.
Also inseam means little as well, as it applies to standover. Femur length as it applies to seat tube ANGLE is what is important.

I think you need a steep seattube angle because it puts you more forward with a given saddle height and saddle position. A seatpost with no setback will also help you I think.

I think you need a steep seattube angle because it puts you more forward with a given saddle height and saddle position. A seatpost with no setback will also help you I think.

In my perfect world, all frames would be measured by the distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the point where a line drawn across the top of the top tube would intersect the center of the seat tube. Obviously, for a sloping top tube, you'd have to have an imaginary parallel top tube that you're measuring for.
To me, center-to-center measurements lost their relevance once we left a world where just about all bikes had the same diameter top tube (25.4mm).

I'm 5'10" with a 33" inseam and relatively long arms and I ride and love my 56cm OCLVs. Measured traditionally, the top tube is 56cm and the seat tube is about 54.5 (center to top of tube).
The top tube is the most important dimension for bike fit. On most frames, the seat tube is roughly the same length as the top tube at the 56cm size, so if you ride 56s normally, the top tube will probably fit you on the 56cm OCLV. But that's just theory -- you should try the 56 and the 58 out.
If you kept everything else (angles, length of other tubes) constant and lengthened the head and seat tubes 1.5 cm to make the 56cm OCLV look more like a traditional 56cm frame, I would think the change wouldn't affect anything except how much road shock the frame absorbs -- the handling characteristics are dictated by wheelbase, stem length, steering angle, and none of that would change. And when people talk about a bike that fits, they're usually mainly talking about a bike that has nice handling characteristics (although Bernard "the biggest frame is the best" Hinault often meant a bike that soaked up bumps on the road well). And again, you should ignore all of this and ride both sizes for a while to see which feels best. Especially for such a pricey bike.--Shayana Kadidal
