Yeah, I was ready for this and prepped a 3-hr tape and put it on SLP so it'll go for 6 hours. Also has the advantage of FFwding through the commercials quicker. Surprisingly little quality loss in going from SP to SLP - probably because the images aren't that good to begin with.

Shame on you - complaining that the coverage is longer than
the minimum promised! This is a problem that cycling fans
should be happy to have to deal with, in my opinion.

OLN has been doing the Giro and Vuelta for a year longer
than they've been doing the Tour (if my memory is right),
and all three tours have had "overtime" coverage since the
beginning. Has OLN been doing their cycling coverage for 4
years now, or even longer? No matter, I try never to miss
any of it!

The reason for overtime is that the European races are
scheduled so that they will end when European viewers get a
chance to watch them. US time zones allow the broadcasts to
be _live_ here, but early in the morning
(6:30AM where I am on the West Coast).

Because the broadcasts are live, they may run short if the
riders are hauling the mail (or have a tailwind, for
example) and long if the stage is slow (or bad weather
affects things, or there is a road closure, or a multitude
of other possible causes). I can recall stages that were
over in less than one hour of the scheduled 90 minute show
-- then you get to listen to the tres caballeros rattle on
about the stage, the overall race, the personalities, their
memories, their hat sizes, etc.

I always set my VCR for 2.5 hours in the morning, unless it
is a big mountain stage, when OLN's coverage is scheduled
for more than 90 minutes, and then I add at least an hour.
(Weekend shows are tape delays, and have never gone long, as
fas as I can recall. I try to tape them by hand, skipping
commercials, to save tape.)

I get roughly 40 hours of cycling on tape for the Giro and
Vuelta, and even more for the Tour. I watch each race
again at least once, then reuse the tapes for the next
year's race.

The afternoon broadcasts are edited and limited to the 90
minutes ...... If that's what you really want.

You clearly have your priorities totally screwed up. Lemme
s'plain something:

This is a unique opportunity to get the full race on the
media of your choice, being cheap and trying to pack as many
stages as you can on a tape/disc is where you go wrong. Go
to your outlet for recording media and buy 1 tape for each
stage (or many more DVD-RW than it would exactly fit.) Put a
fresh tape or a disc with sufficient capacity in for each
day and start recording a few minutes before the show starts
and let it run. The reality is if the end gets cut off you
only have yourself to blame for cutting corners. You'll
never get that complete footage of the entire race on a 10
hour DVD set so take advantage of what you can get now.

(I wish they had the audio on OLNTV.COM but I couldn't find
it and Eurosport timed out on me. I'd love to record that,
some of the stuff that is said during breaks is priceless.)

I've been doing the same as the above ... my problem ...
where to put the BOXES of tapes !

I've got enough to last well past retirement already.

WHen taping the tour, I learned to set the timer with an
extra hour leeway. You never know, and I'd rather not miss a
finish. Often it did run over.

With the tour I preferred getting the morning live coverage,
I didn't like all the extra stuff in the evenings and more
ads. It's worth it to set your timer with an extra hour and
tape in the mornings!
