  1. Greetings from the flatlands of East Anglia, specifically
the Gedney Marsh area. I have been lurking around this group
for the past few months and have to say how very interesting
    and friendly I have found
it.Yesterday I completed part of the Nene Way walk,
ending up in Peterborough. For anyone interested the
"Outdoor" shop there is selling Leki Makalu poles at
25 UKP per PAIR. Many thanx to Pete's Poles Page too,
fascinating reading. Thanx for listening and have a
    nice day......JS-M

You're obviously made for around here, sharing info on poles
but Pete's pole page ... Fascinating?

Reminds me of the time, some years ago, when my wife and I
looked at a house in Gedney Drove End. We didn't like the
house, but said to the owner that whilst we were in the
area, we'd like to visit the sea (it's shown as by the Wash
on the map - for those that aren't familar with the area).
The house owner looked at us a bit oddly, and said to go to
the end of the road, through the gate and keep walking. We
did this and walked through the field. After some time we
noticed bits of seaweed and marine detritus in the grass,
but no sea. We kept walking for some time, with little
    change in the scenery
    - just grassland. After a time we got fed up when we
realised that there appeared to be no clearly defined
coastline - the meadow just stretched away into the
distance and merged in a shimmering haze with the
sky. I guess the sea was out there somewhere, but we
    never found it!

Don't like to tell you Jim, but you were probably walking ON
the sea at that point. This whole area is one huge salt flat
periodically inundated by the sea. There is no finer place
to be on a freezing winter's night when a Siberian storm is
howling like a banshee and skeins of wild geese are
flighting in over the Wash. A full moon and gurgling runnels
of water underfoot only add to the fantastic atmosphere.
    Cheers, J. S-M

.....Don't like to tell you Jim but you were WALKING ON the
sea. This area is one huge saltflat which periodically
becomes inundated by the sea. There are runnels of sea water
coming almost to my barn at high tide. During winter months
under a full moon with flighting geese streaming in from the
east, a Siberian wind from the steppes and gurgling water
underfoot there is no place on earth like it....
