  1. How well does a food saver keep fresh fruit? I'm thinking
peeled, sliced apples that I do not want to freeze. I would
like to make small bags of apples for DD's lunches. Maybe
make a batch of apples once a week so put a pack in her
lunch box every day. What got me thinking about this is we
went to McDonalds today and they are now selling sealed bags
of sliced apples w/ some kind of dipping sauce. She wasn't
even interested in the sauce but LOVED the apples. The
apples are treated w/ a preservative, but I would also like
    to avoid that. TIA!

I don't know about the foodsaver, Kat, but I remember from a
canning class that the apples can be dipped in fruit juice
to slow the darkening. Ascorbic acid. Try some apple juice.

  3. lemon juice on the apples will keep them from getting brown.
Apples are a good treat for lunches, how about just cutting
them up in the evening before or the morning of, or if she
is old enough let her eat them just the way they are? But I
liked it when my mom used to cut up the sandwiches in thirds
instead of halves so may be cutting apples is a good idea!

When Consumer Reports tested it everything other than
bananas came lasted longer in the fridge. Bananas did last
longest in the Fruit Saver though.

I gave apple juice a try ... but the apples still ended up
brown. Next I'll try OJ 🙂 THanks ~Kat

When I have tried lemon juice she says the apples are too
sour. Can I water it down?

My DD has CP and her fine motor skills are delayed. Trying
to eat an apple for her would be like a typical needs child
trying to eat an apple the size of a large beach ball.

lol, I liked my pb&j's cut into 4 triangles ... for some
reason .. they just tasted better that way 🙂 ~Kat

For most fruit, refrigeration worked better than the Fruit
Saver when CR tested it. The one exception was that bananas
lasted longer in the Fruit Saver than they did in the
refrigerator (not that I refrigerate bananas myself).

  9. The apples turn brown because they are exposed to air after
cutting. I would try watered down lemon juice or add brown
sugar to it, (but that may not be optimal). It may be that
any citrus fruit juice or apple juice can help keep them
    fresh. Keep experimenting!

    take care Liz

Have you tried 'EverFresh'? It's ascorbic and citric acids,
and you can find it in the canning section of your
supermarket. It's used to keep fruits from turning color, so
I'm sure it will work for what you need it for. I don't know
if it would make the apples too [censored], however, though it may
be worth a try. Certainly cheaper than buying a Tilia and
    the associated bags.

  11. 99% of the time I use the sealable containers to seal fruit.
It just does a better job. You could then open the container
and seal the fruit in small bags for a short time ease of
use. I do watermelon, grapes, cantaloupe, pears, etc with
good results. I usually serve a little fruit at the evening
meal and by using the containers I can stretch the "shelf
life" to 21 days for fresh cut or peeled fruit. .
