  1. I attempted a Lakeland Loop yesterday. Wrynose, Hardknott
and Whilatter Passes. I had to walk some parts ! A 75
mile ride in total, parts of my legs hurt that have never
    hurt before.

Well you certainly chose a tough ride. Wrynose from that
side is a pig - especially the last 300 yards or so.

I'm hoping to do something similar on Tuesday. Ulverston -
Ulpha - Birker Fell - Santon Bridge - Wasdale Head
(Wastwater) - Boot - Hardknott - Wrynose - Coniston and
home. Should be a similar sort of distance. Lets hope the
sun's shining (though by Hardknott I'll probably be past
caring ;-) and the little cafe at Cockley Beck at the foot
    of Hardknott is open!

It certainly did every day last week! Went up with family
and mtb and was joined by friends on Sunday for a ride
incorporating the Walna Scar Road, fantastic! My mates
front Hope pads cooked on the road descent from WSR into
Coniston and we all copped a bit of sunburn despite using
sun block (poorly applied I s'pose). Managed another couple
of off-road jaunts from our place near Grizebeck across the
fells to do a loop around Grizedale Forest and then a long
bridleway descent with Coniston Water below, a feast for
    the senses.

The week ended all too soon :-(

Your telling me ! It was a great ride though, I'd not been
over Wrynose & Hardknott before, not even with a motor.
Fantastic places, well worth the effort. I felt a bit rough
in the morning but after lunch in Gosforth I was climbing
better, probably due to the hills being less severe. The
ride to Ennerdale Bridge over the moor is good, several
miles of climbing with little traffic.

That's a bit of the Fred Whitton Challenge I did last
    Monday.

A challenge around the Lake District climbing the main
passes. It starts and finishes in Coniston. During its
114 miles circuit it takes in Ambleside, Kirkstone Pass,
    Patterdale, Troutbeck, Keswick, Borrowdale, Honister
Pass, Buttermere, Newlands Pass, Braithwaite, Whinlatter
Pass, Loweswater, Ennerdale Bridge, Gosforth, Eskdale
with the huge Hardknott and Wrynose Passes before heading
    back to Coniston.

Just under 350 riders did it this year. See you there
    next year?

Mmm maybe . I had planned to include Newlands Hause and
Honister Pass then maybe Kirkstone Pass which would pretty
much cover the route you took. As it turned out I'd had
enough when I got back to Braithwaite so took the direct
route back to Ambleside where I was camping. I had a reserve
plan for Saturday to do the Kirkstone/Patterdale - A6/Shap
loop but I had to come back early so I didn't. It'll make a
nice little excursion for a few weeks time.

It's a nice event and route. Only busy bit is a stretch
on the A66 which can't be avoided. Rob Jebb went round in
    6 hours 🙂

  8. Take comfort in the fact that you did it the hard way round.
Wrynose from the 'Coniston' side is much tougher than from
    Cockley Beck. Allan.

Christ. The Wrynose and Hardknott were bad enough from the
car (passenger seat). Planning at some point to do some Lake
District riding though, I was up there today (in walking
boots, not cycling shoes) and I had a good look over at the
Wrynose (east side) and it looks a bit of a bar steward.

Ah, I did wonder if there was a recognised 'round' of the
passes. A couple of guys I know in Durham were thinking
about going across and doing something like this...

...but not as part of an organised event.

Do you know if there are any other rounds for road cycling
in the Lakes? I'm thinking of something that compares to the
Bob Graham round for fell runners, 42 peaks in 24 hours
    (about 74 miles.)

I have no idea, maybe it could be made into an Audax
    Permanent, perhaps it already is.

A year or two ago a rider published his circuit online which
is what mine was based on. It is almost identical to the
Fred Whitton Challenge route that Arthur describes but I
think in the opposite direction. I can't find it online
anymore but thankfully I printed it off. You know I might
prepare my plans again and put them on my website along with
(sketch) maps. I didn't have my camera with me last week as
my wife needed it at home, I wish I had as the views were
awesome, the hills looked fierce from the bottom and the
signs were a joke (Severe Gradient, not suitable for
caravans, 30% gradient, don't even think about cycling up)

I thought the ride I did this weekend was hard enough (see other thread), but this sounds like complete lunacy - where do I sign up? 🙂

I can recommended that route then. I have the route sheet
somewhere if you want the details but it's not that helpful.

That's the nearest thing to gaining classic status. The
    times for the event are

Elite certificate: Under 7 hours 1st Class: Under 8 2nd
Class: Completion within the time (about 12 hours)

It could be, but the event itself is very non-AUK. It feels
like a contential cyclo-sportif not an audax.

Oh, there's a nice route profile here:

Cheers. I just did a google and am I right in ascertaining
the Rob Jebb (fell runner!) was the fastest cyclist in this
year's event? He probably lives in the Lakes and that's
    probably his daily commute!

Bizarrely, I found the entry form and entries had to be sent
to Paul Loftus, one of the guys I know in Durham who wanted
to do a cicuit of the passes is called Paul Loftus.

That's the one. Fell runner and winner of the three peaks
