  1. I just had lumbar discectomy and laminectomy. I have been
running long distance for 7 years, 15 marathons, 40-50 miles
per week, best time 3:08. I am 52 years old. Anybody in this
group have this surgery? What is my likelihood of getting
back to my former running shape. Thanks, Bill

Bill I had lumbar microdiscectomy January 2003 - in August
    2003 I ran 37 miles in an 8 hour run. I'm planning a 100km
in a month and hope to run a 100 mile in September.

A Better Life Poll: Most Iraqis Ambivalent About the War,
    But Not Its Results

    Analysis By Gary Langer

    abcnews.go.comIra
    q_anniversary_poll_040314.html

March 15— A year after the bombs began to fall, Iraqis
express ambivalence about the U.S.-led invasion of their
country, but not about its effect: Most say their lives are
going well and have improved since before the war, and
expectations for the future are very high.

  3. Thanks Phil for the good word. I am 2 weeks post-
    surgery, and the
Dr.'s orders so far are rest, change positions often and
walk frequently, but short distances. Also, not bending
or lifting anything more than 5-10 lbs. until I see him
again. I won't see him for another 2 weeks. Right now I
am walking on the treadmill 5 minutes at a time, 3MPH,
and am up to 10 times a day (2.5M/day total). The first
week I just walked a couple of times a day. After I see
the Doc, he will prescribe some form of physical therapy.
The Doc is an older guy, not a runner, but I picked him
for his neurosurgical skills, not his running ability.
What rehab program worked for you? What can I expect when
I start getting around better? My back, hips, and
hamstring were in spasm for months, so I am going to
start Active Release Therapy as soon as my Doc says it is
OK, hopefully in 6 weeks. Is this a good idea? When do
you think I can run again? Before surgery, Doc suggested
anywhere from 6-12 weeks. People that I have spoken to
that have had this surgery(none have run long
distance)say that my marathon days are over. It is good
to hear that you have done well. Do you have any post-
surgery symptoms, like leg numbness, strength loss, butt
pain, back muscle aches, spasms? I withdrew from Boston
this year, and BAA will carry my qualification until next
April. Is it is a reasonable goal to run next year? (lots
    of questions) thanks, Bill

  4. As one Bill to another, I must tell you that your life is
over, and suicide is the only honorable way out.

I suspect it will be somewhat longer before you can run. I
think it was 3 months before I started running. I felt like
I could run much sooner but was encouraged to mait by both
the surgon and the physical terrorist er therapist.

The therapy was fairly useless, much too light. I did learn
three back exercises I still do 3x per week.

I don't think a Marathon next spring is at all unreasonable.
I did and ultra approx 7 months after surgery.

    Good luck!

Friday, April 30, 2004 In Wisconsin, the Vice President
Reinforces the Need for Decisive Action to Protect America

    Pfister Hotel Milwaukee, Wisconsin

    THE VICE PRESIDENT

    ...

The President and I understand that America requires an
aggressive strategy against these enemies -- not merely to
prosecute a series of crimes, but to fight and win a global
campaign against a terror network. Such an enemy cannot be
deterred, contained, appeased, or negotiated with. It can
only be destroyed. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the
    business at hand. (Applause.)

In Afghanistan, we've removed the brutal Taliban from power
and destroyed the al Qaeda training camps. In Iraq, America
and our allies rid the Iraqi people of a murderous dictator,
and rid the world of a menace to our peace and security.
Just over a year ago, Saddam Hussein controlled the lives of
25 million people. Today, he's in jail. He will never again
brutalize the Iraqi people, never again support dangerous
terrorists or pursue weapons of mass destruction, never
again threaten the United States of America. (Applause.)

And what has this to do with running or back surgery?

For what it's worth, I agree. Bush should go.

  8. Another mindless, non-thinking idiot has spoken his undieing
love for an idiot with an IQ of 98. Why does John Kerry
scare you so much? Is it the fact he can T-H-I-N-K (ask your
mommy to tell you what it spells), and has actually SHOWN UP
for his military service, being decorated as a war hero,
instead of snorting cocaine and being arrested for drunk
driving? Or are you trying to tell us a decorated war
veteran is not capable of defending our country against
terrorism? We want, NO NEED the world to know that 2 out of
3 american adults DESPISE GWB, and the way he has destroyed
our country. Unfortuneately not all american adults vote,
because if these "unheard voices" did, you'd never have seen
him be "appointed" in the first place. I think the whole
world will breathe a sigh of relief in november when we oust
the lil' [censored], and try to restore our wonderful country to
what it was 4 years ago. For nearly all of america, we
apologize for the last 4 years, it was our government not we
the people who did those things. We will do our best to see
    it never happens again.
