There is a famous example regarding Einstein's Theory of
Relativity (would be very suprised if Donovan didn't know
about this). You have two guys, one standing at a train
station, the other aboard a train that is moving toward the
train station at high speed. The engineer of the train blows
the horn on the train from just before until just past the
train station. The guy at the station hears a change in the
pitch of the sound of the horn due to the change in the
*relative* velocity (relative to the station) of the train
as it passes the station, while the guy on the train hears
no difference.
Likewise, you can have two guys in a health club, one on the
treadmill (watching a TV monitor) and the other looking at
the treadmill (standing). The TV monitor is pointed straight

standing next to the treadmill sees that the guy isn't
moving, but the guy on the treadmill looking at the TV
monitor sees his feet moving forward over a stationary belt
at XX miles/hr, against the intertia of the belt of the
treadmill, which by HIS frame of reference isn't moving.
Now, if you slow the belt velocity way down, and the guy on
the treadmill uses the rails of the treadmill to push
against the inertia of the belt so that the belt stops
moving, THEN no work is being done.

If you are an MD and you have patient(s) that are just
starting a running program, the total energy cost from
running might be limited because the patient cannot run
enough miles (yet) to burn much energy at 100 kcal/mile,
but this is an effect of the (lack of) fitness status of
the patient rather than the effect of running itself having
no effect.
Go ask Andy Hass how many calories he has to take in just to
keep from losing weight.
The YMCA has a very well respected starting running program
for people who have had bypass heart surgery. Some of the
people in this program (60's-80's) have gone on to finish
marathons. If they listened to Dr. Chung, they'd probably be
dead by now.
