I just ran a hilly 15km race in the absolute worst weather
conditions I've experienced in a while!
It was 3C (38F) with a steady baseline wind of 30 - 35km/h
(about 20mph) that regularly gusted to 55 - 60km/h (35 -
40mph) and stayed there for like, a minute or more at a
time, to a point that it became a little comical. Oh, it
was also raining hard... like a steady gale of really
cold, drenching water that stopped briefly with about a
mile to go.
Two Kenyans showed up for the money ($300, $200, and $100
for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively), so I knew I wasn't
winning anything. The race began with the Kenyans and took
off one local guy who is one of the best runners in
Southern Ontario taking the lead, so there were the top 3
right there.
I ended up in a chase group of 5 runners, taking turns
sharing 4th place. We ran the first 3km in 10:54, but as I
mentioned the wind was just horrendous, so we were already
fighting it. It really took it's toll on everyone. The
serious hills started at around 10km. We had reached 8km in
31:19 and 10km in 38:38, which if you know my times really
illustrates the problems with the driving wind and rain.
After the hills our little chase group started thinning out;
helped along by a pair of sub-6 minute miles thrown in right
when the hills ended. I had a little lapse and found myself
drifting back a little. I was never able to regain 4th, and
slipped back to 7th overall in the final 10 minutes,
finishing in 57:44.
The winner ran a 53:33, and I've personally seen him
run under 46:00 for 15km so he suffered, too, seemingly
more than me.
If the weather was any different I am confident I would have
run 56:00 -
56:30 for that course. Still, it was a lot of fun in a
weird way. I won a $25 gift certificate to the local
running store.
thanks for reading!
cheers,
