delimiter ("-- "😉. This makes many newsreaders think you've
written nothing, and have a long siganture.

We are being helpful on this bit John :-)

Ok, the sig is the bit at the bottom of the post with
your name etc.

Convention is to separate (delimit) this from the message
by two dashes followed by a space. Decent newsreaders will
then use this to snip the sig automatically when replying.
(which means replying to one with the message in the sig
means no quote)

also my newsreader can display the sig in a separate colour,
which makes ignoring it easier

You should see the see the sig separator underneath this
line

newline. This means that your entire message is seen as a
signature. Anyone replying with a proper newsreader will
automatically snip the entire sig by default, as has
happened here. Some people who suppress signatures when they
read messages will not see your message at all.

It is customary to mark out any "signature" bit at the end
of a message with "-- " on a line my itself (ie two dashes
and a space). Then most news reading software can be set to
ignore it if desired.

You just seem to accidentally walk into some or other pit
whenever you post anything here (like having a message
consisting entirely of a signature), to the extent that some
people may think it's deliberate trolling (I don't, but I'd
say such a feeling may be understandable).

(visible) reference to the post to which it is following up.

I think there is a net beginners group where questions like
this could be better put.

Agreed, although the basic rules are pretty simple:

1) Don't top-post - put your reply *below* the relevant text
of the previous message.

2) Provide relevant history - include the minimum amount of
previous posts necessary for your post to be read as a
complete document by someone familiar with the thread

3) Try not to cross-post or multi-post - restrict your post
to one group at a time.

4) Don't post in HTML, or include attachments in non-
binary groups

5) Don't ask for email replies - this is a discussion group,
not a help desk.

6) Finish with your signature after the standard "-- "
delimiter. Keep your sig small.

Follow those, and you'll be fine.

I think that John "Campervan" Shackford got badly singed a
year or two ago when he posted junk about his campervan...
he spat his dummy then...but has resurfaced... oh well... it
got me to resurface after 6 months of quality lurking... Ian
