  1. My Cardiologist gave me the annual once over, and said that
I didn't need to come back for TWO years. Which is a good
sign. Then I asked him about my mountain biking, etc.

Looking at my file he told me, once again, that falling off
my bike is a definite "No-No!" but that "since there aren't
any really big hills around you needn't worry that much...as
long as you don't fall off!"

Now admittedly, I've got a much more highly developed
ability to become inadvertently separated from my bike than
most, but you don't need to be riding down the side of a
mountain to have a good crash.

Heck, I can be riding on the track of a fire road flooded by
    a beaver pond and have a good crash/splash. I don't need a
"really big hill" to do so.

Kinda makes me wonder where he got **his** impression of
    mountain biking.

Great news, Rog! Just keep the shiny side up and enjoy the
    ride!

I wonder if there's such thing as a sports cardiologist?
When I bunged up my knee I went to an orthopoed who
specialized in sports medicine. I wanted somebody who was
interested in restoring full athletic function, rather than
some guy who does hip replacements day in and day out and
thinks I ought to be grateful to be walking without a cane.

We've even got a new, free, sports injury hotline here in
St. Louis now. It was started because so often when an
athlete is injured, that initial trip to the ER is a waste
of time and money - they just wind up getting referred to a
specialist. Now, if you get hurt you can call this hotline
and get advice (sit tight or head to the ER) and a referral
to be seen within 24 hours (the call is free, the office
visit is between you and your insurance carrier). It's got
some pretty impressive names on staff, too, including Dr.
Richard Lehman, medical director for the Florida Panthers
and former team doctor for the St. Louis Blues and Dr.
Michael Milne, former team doctor for the U.S. Ski team.

First, congratulations on the good report, and thanks for
    the updates.

If your doc doesn't ride, he probably thinks mountain biking
is riding paved roads in the mountains, or gentle packed
    gravel trails through a park.

My no. 1 doc is a committed roadie named Carl who knows all
about the broken bones and tears and such common to our
sport. When he rags on me I remind him that I'd rather crash
on dirt at 25mph than be hit by a car doing 40 on pavement.

Reminds me of his bachelor party 10 yrs ago. After all the
partying, we were all sitting around real serious-like,
giving him advice. I told him to always treat his wife with
honor; to get honor and stay honor.

thought you wanted to hear that,

That way she'll stay honor... knees.
