I actually do both. I carry my tubes in a under-saddle pack and the small tool kit in my jersey.

I own a saddle pack, and everyone I know uses them, but mine sits on my shelf and never gets used... I guess I like keeping my bike uncluttered. There tends to be enough room in my jersey to keep a tube, levers, a patchkit, a few bars, some shot, ID, keys, and cell phone...

It's a tight squeeze, but packing light is good. Works for me. Anyone want to buy a saddlepack?

I don't have a saddle-pack yet but I plan to get one soon. Currently, I use a tube to tie my pump to the seatpost and I keep everything else in my pockets.

Ditto. I carry as little as possible. Levers, exta tube in the saddle pack, pump on the frame, ID, little cash in the pockets. On long rides I take a small toolkit and a patch kit. That's about it. Most days I make it a point to leave the cell at home. Hey, it's my time!

It depends on the day for me. On long days, I have my aquarack double water water holder on my seatpost so all of my stuff goes in my jersey. On my shorter days, I put my little pack on and keep everything in there.

I keep essentials (tube, patches, levers, multitool, etc) in a small saddlepack mainly so I am a little less likely to forget to put something really critical in a shirt pocket when I ride. Recently switched to a small Headland semi-rigid clamshell-style pack that I love. It won't stretch the way that my old fabric bag would so I had to put my mini-pump on a bottlecage bracket. This works well but Sat. managed to forget to put it on after transporting my bike to the beachhouse and realized it was absent right before I ran over the remains of a tossed six-pack of beer bottles about twenty miles out on a solo coast ride. I sweated bullets for a few minutes!! Guess it's time to toss a CO2 inflator in the bag to save myself from airheadedness.

BTW Anyone have any experience with the Crank Brothers Power Pump? Looks like it small enough to fit in my nifty pack and claims to be good for 100psi.

I dont like the clatter on my bike so I modified an Isostar water bottle and thats where by gear goes. On long rides I put the excess gear on my jersey pockets including food. I also use the small plastic containers for film rolls to store peanuts. They're quite handy.

I like the idea of not "cluttering-up" the look of the bike with a saddle bag but I hate having a lot of stuff in my jersey pockets (that is if I'm even wearing a jersey, which I usually don't when I'm commuting) when I'm riding. So I kind of feel like a saddle bag is an unfortunate necessity. You gotta be able to change a flat or make a quick repair if you have to.

I'm with you Meehs regarding too much stuff in the jersey pockets, so I have a small saddle bag to hold 3 - CO2 cartridges, 2 - tubes, a tyre lever, Park multi-tool, and $20. Cell phone and food end-up in my jersey.

When I'm commuting, I've got a backpack, so if I'm not wearing a jersey, it's not a big problem... and as a matter of general routine, I store my miscenllaneous junk (gloves, tubes, sunglasses) in my helmet when not in use, so I don't forget to stuff anything in my jersey pockets when I go out.

I suppose I've developed a 'bag free' system that works.

On my MTB I use my camelbak to carry everything. On the road, I have a frame pump and a [censored] pack to carry everything else. On longer road rides, I use my camel too. I read somewhere in a mag that you should keep your frame light and not put so much stuff on your bike.

for me, i have enough room in my camelbak for CO2, patch kit, $$, etc., even sometimes room enough for a sandwich 🙂

Same here, tubes are usually too bulky for a jersey pocket.

I carry in my jersey only stuff that is soft and has no sharp edges.. In case you wipe you want to make sure nothing pokes you, like a tire lever or a 4mm Allen key..

co2 pump patches tube id card, bank card under the saddle and off of my back, i cant see it when im on my bike and its a lot more comfy than having my jersey choking me cause i got so much sh--[censored] in the pockets.

Don't care for the look of saddle bags on bikes especially if it's an expensive racer. Just looks naff to me as if the person riding is a tourer or what not. Also i've seen saddle bags fall off bikes..i'd go stark raving mad if after arriving home i found me keys weren't there but instead were lying 20 miles away on a bloody road somewhere. Much prefer to carry a spare inner tube, patches and a small pump in me jersey pocket...well that's what they were designed for in the first place..to carry stuff.
