  1. Did dinosaurs lack daughters?

    23 April 2004 HELEN PEARSON

    Dinosaurs may have been forced into extinction partly
    because there were too few females, say researchers in the
    UK. The claim revives a venerable debate.

    The creatures died out roughly 65 million years ago, around
    the time that a huge meteor slammed into earth. Some
    scientists believe that the immense dust cloud thrown up
    caused swings in the climate that the dinosaurs were unable
    to survive.

    However, it is not clear exactly how the temperature change
    killed them off. Now David Miller of the University of Leeds
    and his colleagues are proposing in Fertility and Sterility
    that if dinosaurs used temperature to determine

    of males to females.

    This idea is based on the reproduction of modern day
    reptiles such as

    temperature at which their eggs are incubated. Male crocs
    hatch in moderate temperatures, while females emerge if the
    heat rises or falls by a few degrees.

    In the case of dinosaurs, Miller suggests that changes in
    temperature after the meteor impact favoured the birth of
    males. Over time females would become rare, causing fewer
    young dinosaurs to be born and species to dwindle to
    extinction. "They'd probably have had it," he says.

    RKS: You might be missing the point - do you think they
    really want to find life on mars? Noooo. They want to test
    Tom Hendricks' theory of the genesis of life, then move on
    to Margulis's theory of symbiogenesis. We'll have to wait a
    few million years before we can the run experiments on
    dinosaur life/death, and eventually we'll get to
    hominid~human experiments.

    Think of Mars as one big lab in which we can test
    evolutionary hypothesis.

    Exciting, isn't it 🙂

    females, some females will turn into males.

    I've seen that discharge of sewage containing female hormone-
    like molecules make male crocodiles develop female features
    and reduce their male features. Perhaps it is the other way
    around? Female crocodile developing male features and
    loosing their female features?

    on reading the original paper by miller et al., i wondered
    how birds managed to become warm blooded in the first place?
    their ancestors

    determination as well. then i remembered that a few years
    ago (quite recently) some other scientists argued that the
    large dinos cannot have been cold blooded for they could
    nenver have gained working temperature through passively
    warming up.

    i also wondered, why the folks at nature did not jump on the
    hint that some turtles might go extinct through global
    warming upsetting their

    reason to go extinct thrown in, and a few spekulative
    sentences on dinos and turtles.

    as far as your point is concerned, I guess I'm really
    missing it. =8-)
