I prefer to go the other way. Coldwell Clough, Oaken
Clough to Edale Cross. Then you can either wander over to
Crowden Tower to have a go at crossing the plateau to
Kinder Downfall or follow the edge via Kinder Low and
Cluther Rocks. Then come down William Clough but keep to
the higher path by the shooting cabin to drop down to the
road just before Hayfield rather than following the track
down by the dam to the road back to town.
Did it on Saturday, Phil's way round (more or less).
Excellent weather brought out huge numbers of people coming
up the Pennine Way from Edale and on the southern edge of
the plateau.
I had a play on Edale Rocks, then along the southern edge as
far as Grindslow Knoll, with an out-and-back detour from Pym
Chair to the two cairns which are candidates for the 636m
highest spot. The peat wasn't very squelchy at all, despite
last week's rain. Saw a couple of hares (one still with its
white coat) and lots of grouse while crossing the peat.
From Grindslow Knoll I headed north up the grough system
which feeds Grinds Brook, to Seal Edge on the northern edge
of the plateau. Then west along the edge and navigated a
grough feeding Fair Brook, getting into the Kinder River
system just below Kinder Gates and so to Kinder Downfall.
Very little water in the waterfall - disappointing as I was
hoping for a decent photo, but I suppose you can't have both
that and easy going across the plateau!
No problems parking on the roadside, near where the higher
path recommended by Phil (the Snake Path) comes out.
I had a really good day out. Many thanks to all who replied.
