"The huge, dual-density foam hipbelt hugged my hips and
combined with a lumbar pad that sat firmly but comfortably
in the small of my back to move almost all of the burden off
my shoulders. The frame, consisting of a plastic sheet and
two aluminum stays, supported the weight like extra back
muscles. Maybe, just maybe, I thought while grunting up
another ridge, a heavy pack isn't such a bad thing. At 7
pounds 5 ounces, the Sovereign is among the weightiest on
the market, and the sturdy suspension is only part of the
reason. Three suspension and sack sizes are available for a
near-custom fit. The pack also boasts an astonishing
capacity range; the medium size swallows up to 6,880 cubic
inches, but collapses to a mere 2,850 cubic inches when you
cinch the clamshell-like panels on the sides of the packbag
around a light load. It's those clamshells that set this
pack apart. Each panel holds a Delrin rod bent like a taut
bow. The pack's natural shape is boxy, with the panels
square to the wearer's back. Once you load the pack,
compression straps pull those panels together like a clam
closing up. Voil, the pack has a more normal-looking
tubular shape and the contents are nice and snug. As for
loading, the Sovereign has both top access (through an
extendable top collar) and panel access (through a large
zippered rear door). Inside the rear flap are storage
pockets for small items. Inside the clamshell panels are
larger mesh pockets. Large mesh pockets on the outside of
the pack hold water and fuel bottles. Which brings us to the
lid. On the plus side, it's a roomy, triangular compartment
that detaches to form a [censored] pack. "
